complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unfortunately, sometimes it helps to ask them for a number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cOn a scale from zero to ten\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This sounds suspiciously like something printed on a clipboard in a waiting room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stay with me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Used carefully, the number is not the interesting part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The conversation hiding behind the number is.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Give the Fog an Edge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI kind of want to change jobs.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kind of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A magnificent unit of measurement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf zero means you have no interest in leaving and ten means you&#8217;re completely ready to go, where are you?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSeven.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You still don&#8217;t know what seven means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But now you have somewhere to look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Important Question Comes Next<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most people instinctively ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhy aren&#8217;t you an eight?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Careful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That points toward deficiency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhy a seven and not a three?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now something different happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They search for the reasons the number is already as high as it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWell, I&#8217;ve been unhappy for months.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;ve saved some money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are other jobs available.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;ve already updated my r\u00e9sum\u00e9.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look at that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are telling you why change matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Importance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One scale can measure importance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cFrom zero to ten, how important is it to you to change this?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat makes it an eight?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy health is starting to suffer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy kids notice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;m tired of thinking about it every day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The number opened a door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reasons are the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Confidence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Importance and confidence are not the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone may say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cChanging this is a ten.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHow confident are you that you could actually do it?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThree.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now we know something useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem is not convincing them that change matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They already know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem may be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I don&#8217;t think I can.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Very different spell required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Readiness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is another scale:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHow ready do you feel to take a step?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone might care enormously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Believe they could succeed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And still not be ready today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps they need information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A safer moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Readiness has its own terrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask What Would Move It One Point<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose confidence is four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHow do we get you to ten?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ten may be on another continent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat would move it from four to five?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the answer may be surprisingly practical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf I knew what it cost.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf my sister came with me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf I had one afternoon free.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf I knew who to call.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The giant transformation just became a phone number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Small Movement Counts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humans like dramatic change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before and after.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But actual change often looks like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four becoming five.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Five becoming five-and-a-half.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person who would not discuss something now asks one question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person who was certain they couldn&#8217;t begins saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not insult small movement because it isn&#8217;t cinematic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Small movement is movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don&#8217;t Worship the Number<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSix.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cInteresting. Last week you said seven.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps they chose six randomly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps seven meant something different last week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps they are hungry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are not laboratory instruments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The number is a conversational handle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not build a cathedral around it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask What the Number Means to Them<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two people can both say five.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI genuinely have no idea.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI want to do it, but I&#8217;m terrified.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat makes it a five for you?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Numbers compress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conversation expands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Reverse Scale<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the useful question points toward staying the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHow committed are you to keeping things exactly as they are?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTwo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat keeps it from being zero?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFear.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHabit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again, the number is only bait for specificity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Confidence Needs Evidence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone rates confidence at three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhy isn&#8217;t it zero?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWell, I&#8217;ve done hard things before.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI know someone who could help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI already know the first step.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are not giving them confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are helping them inspect the evidence already supporting it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don&#8217;t Turn the Scale Into Pressure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says readiness is four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You respond:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cOnly four?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There goes the spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the number has become a grade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cCome on, you&#8217;re at least a seven.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You asked for their map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not correct the coordinates because you dislike where they are standing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four is information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Number Can Change During the Conversation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the beginning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Confidence: three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After discussing resources:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhere is it now?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMaybe five.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What changed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI realized I don&#8217;t have to do the whole thing at once.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That sentence matters much more than the number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scaling Conflict<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This technique works outside personal change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThis is a huge problem.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf ten is catastrophic and zero is nothing, where is it?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSix.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat makes it a six?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the vague emergency acquires features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe everyone discovers they were reacting to the word <strong>huge<\/strong> differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Specificity lowers unnecessary fog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Scaling Emotion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Carefully:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHow angry are you right now, zero to ten?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cDo you want to keep talking at eight, or would it help to pause?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the scale helps with regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cEight is ridiculous.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The thermometer does not argue with the weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mage&#8217;s Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When someone describes something vaguely\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cSort of.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cMaybe.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cPretty important.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI don&#8217;t know if I can.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try giving the fog a number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then immediately become curious about the number.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhy there?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhy not lower?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat would move it one point?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat makes it that important?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The number is not the answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
