class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI don&#8217;t want to leave.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This can look like confusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it is something much more ordinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Both statements are true.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Two Wolves<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Human decisions often contain competing desires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stay safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take the risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep the relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Be free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Save the money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enjoy the life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Achieve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stay quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We sometimes treat this as a defect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cMake up your mind.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But perhaps the mind is already made up about two different things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem is that reality may only permit one choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ambivalence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ambivalence means holding competing motivations about the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is common near change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone wants to stop drinking but loves drinking with friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone wants a new job but values stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone wants to move but doesn&#8217;t want to leave family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone wants to end a relationship and desperately wants it to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is nothing mysterious here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Change has benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So does staying the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Change has costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So does staying the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mage lets all four enter the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don&#8217;t Join One Side Too Quickly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your friend says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI think I should quit.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You agree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Absolutely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Quit immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now something strange happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They begin telling you why they should stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe benefits are excellent.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy boss isn&#8217;t always bad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;d lose seniority.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe market isn&#8217;t great.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You accidentally became the representative for one wolf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So they began feeding the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Give Both Wolves a Chair<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat makes you want to leave?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cAnd what makes you want to stay?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Listen things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What is good about staying the same?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What is difficult about staying the same?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What might be good about changing?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What might be difficult about changing?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four corners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stay at the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stable money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Familiar work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Difficult:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exhaustion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No advancement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bad manager.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Possibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Better schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Difficult:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Loss of benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the decision has shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don&#8217;t Cheat the Ledger<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you want someone to change, there is a temptation to make one column enormous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Benefits of change:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sunlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Birdsong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Benefits of staying the same:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cowardice, probably.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you are exploring ambivalence, explore it honestly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Otherwise you are performing persuasion while pretending to conduct an investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Cost of Change Is Real<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People sometimes say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf you really wanted it, you&#8217;d do it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Too simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person can desperately want change and still face enormous costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leaving a job can threaten housing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leaving a relationship can mean losing community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Setting a boundary can change a family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Getting sober can mean losing an entire social world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Starting over can mean admitting the old plan failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wanting change does not make its price imaginary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Respect the price.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Cost of Staying Is Real Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Familiarity hides cost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the person is already paying it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The miserable commute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The recurring argument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The physical pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lost time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The anxiety every Sunday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These costs can become invisible because they arrive in small installments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf nothing changes for another year, what does that look like?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now staying becomes a choice with consequences too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Travel Forward in Time<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine both roads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cSuppose you stay. Six months from now, what do you think life looks like?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cSuppose you leave. What does that version look like?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not fantasy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Projection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let the person walk around inside each possible future for a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes one road feels different once they stand on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Travel Backward Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhen did you first start thinking about changing this?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTwo weeks ago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHonestly? Three years ago.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Duration matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A thought that appeared yesterday and a thought returning for three years are not necessarily the same creature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask What Matters Most<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually the conversation may need to move beneath pros and cons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhich of these things matters most to you?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not all costs carry equal weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ten minor conveniences may not outweigh one essential value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A job may have fifteen advantages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But if the work requires someone to violate something central to who they want to be, the arithmetic changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Human decisions are not spreadsheets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Weight matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don&#8217;t Solve the Contradiction for Them<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI want freedom, but I also want security.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may immediately see a compromise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wonderful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hold it for a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf you had to protect one more than the other right now, which would it be?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe they know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe they don&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The contradiction belongs to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Give them time to hear it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sometimes Both Wolves Are Right<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There may be no clean answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leaving will hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Staying will hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking will cost something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silence will cost something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A mature conversation does not always uncover the secret option where nobody loses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes clarity means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I understand exactly why this decision is difficult.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That itself can be valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The person stops interpreting difficulty as personal failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision is difficult because the decision is difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Watch Which Wolf They Feed<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the person speaks, listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which side produces more energy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which side produces more specific language?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which side sounds like obligation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which sounds like desire?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which reasons belong to them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which sound inherited from someone else?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not announce your diagnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhen you talk about leaving, your whole voice changes. Do you notice that?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now they can consider it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Decision Still Belongs to Them<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After an hour of careful exploration, they may choose the option you think is wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hard part again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI understand your reasoning.
