I just can&#8217;t keep doing this forever.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A footstep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Small.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Easy to miss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And very easy to accidentally crush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The First Movement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone can spend an hour explaining why nothing can change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The job pays too well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The relationship is complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They don&#8217;t have enough time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They&#8217;ve tried before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their family won&#8217;t understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cBut I do miss who I was before all this.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You could immediately say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cExactly! That&#8217;s why you need to leave.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And there is a good chance they will respond:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWell, I can&#8217;t just leave.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You heard movement and immediately pushed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So they pushed back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Change Talk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In motivational interviewing, there is a useful idea called <strong>change talk.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It means language that leans toward change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not necessarily commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not necessarily action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can sound like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI want\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI wish\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI could\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI need\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThings can&#8217;t keep going like this.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cMaybe I should\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;d feel better if\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are little doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not kick them open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask About the Movement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI really need to get out more.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes, you do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat makes you say that?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now they may tell you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;ve been isolated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI miss meeting people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI feel better when I leave the house.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI used to have more of a life.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look at what is happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are constructing the reasons for change themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Desire<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the first sign is simply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I want.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want to feel stronger.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want to stop fighting about money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want to sleep normally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want to enjoy work again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t rush past desire because it isn&#8217;t a plan yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat would that give you?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat would be different if you had that?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let desire develop a shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ability<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another kind of movement sounds like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I could.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI could start earlier.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI could call my brother.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI could probably afford one class a week.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;ve done this before.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These statements contain possibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reflect it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cSo there is a version of this you think you could actually do.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYeah. I guess there is.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another footstep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reasons<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People also reveal their own arguments for change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf I keep spending like this, I&#8217;m never going to get out of debt.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not interrupt with your seventeen additional reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat worries you most about that?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don&#8217;t want to be fifty and still living paycheck to paycheck.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the reason belongs to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Personal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Specific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much stronger than:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You should be more financially responsible.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Need<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the language gets stronger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI need to stop.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cSomething has to change.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI can&#8217;t keep living like this.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This deserves attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat feels like it has reached the limit?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFinally!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;ve been telling you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those responses turn their realization into your victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leave it theirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don&#8217;t Argue for Change Harder Than They Do<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the strangest conversational laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The harder you argue one side, the more likely the other person is to begin arguing the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou need to leave that job.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut the benefits are good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou hate it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt&#8217;s not always terrible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou complain every day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy coworkers are great.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou literally said you wanted to quit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was frustrated.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now look at the roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are arguing for them to quit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are practicing arguments for staying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps that is exactly backward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Invite Them to Make the Case<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat makes you think about leaving?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat else?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe hours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy manager.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI haven&#8217;t learned anything new in two years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;ve started dreading Sunday night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now they are hearing themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have not inserted anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have simply kept the door open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sustain Talk Exists Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People also speak in the direction of staying the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI don&#8217;t have time.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIt isn&#8217;t really that bad.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI tried before.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cMy family would hate it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cMaybe later.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is sometimes called <strong>sustain talk.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not attack it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It usually contains real information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThe stability matters to you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cAnd you&#8217;re worried changing this could create another problem.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are not trying to eliminate half of their mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are trying to understand the whole creature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ambivalence Is Normal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person can genuinely want two incompatible things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI want to leave.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI want to stay.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humans do this constantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Freedom and security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adventure and familiarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Health and comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Independence and belonging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Change conversations often fail because someone tries to kill one side too early.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cPart of you wants the freedom, and another part doesn&#8217;t want to lose the stability.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both voices get chairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Seed Does Not Need Pulling<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine planting a seed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then every morning you dig it up to check whether it is growing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excellent gardening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Persuasion can work like that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone begins considering change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We become excited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Advise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Push.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soon the person wants distance from us more than they want the change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the correct move after hearing change talk is simply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Remember it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let it breathe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Strengthen Without Steering<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI think I could probably do it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat makes you think you could?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beautiful question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They must search for evidence of their own ability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWell, I did something similar before.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI already know the first few steps.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy sister said she&#8217;d help.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now possibility has roots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Listen for Commitment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually language may change again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m going to.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;ll call tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;ll start Monday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;ve decided.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now planning may be useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat&#8217;s your first step?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not twenty steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
