{"id":709,"date":"2026-08-17T19:47:09","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T19:47:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=709"},"modified":"2026-08-18T22:11:21","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T22:11:21","slug":"gather-the-pieces-on-the-table","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=709","title":{"rendered":"Gather the Pieces on the Table"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Rapport<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Long conversations accumulate debris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A fact here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A feeling there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three disagreements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two agreements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something important somebody said twenty minutes ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A question nobody answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A side story about a dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually everyone is standing inside a conversational workshop surrounded by parts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is when the Mage stops adding pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And gathers them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Summary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A summary says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Here is what I think we have established so far.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is my closing argument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Here is what you should believe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A good summary builds a temporary shared map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cOkay. You like the job itself, you don&#8217;t trust your manager, the money is keeping you there, and you&#8217;re worried leaving now would look unstable on your r\u00e9sum\u00e9. Is that about right?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the person can look at the whole thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes they say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAlmost.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both are useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Summaries Work<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conversation happens one sentence at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Human problems do not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person may tell you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI hate my job.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Five minutes later:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy coworkers are actually great.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI finally make enough money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI dread seeing my boss.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each statement is a tile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A summary reveals the mosaic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cSo there are parts of the job you genuinely value, but the relationship with your boss is making the whole place difficult to tolerate.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Summarize Without Editing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a dishonest version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI want to move, but I&#8217;m scared about money, and I&#8217;d miss my family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You summarize:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cSo you want to move.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Convenient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have removed everything obstructing the conclusion you preferred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A fair summary keeps the inconvenient pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou want to move, you&#8217;re worried about whether you can afford it, and leaving your family would be painful.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All three belong on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Include Both Sides of Ambivalence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is especially important when someone is undecided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cPart of you wants to stay because this place is familiar and safe. Another part feels like staying is costing you something.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That can be more useful than immediately asking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo which one are you going to choose?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ambivalence is not always confusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it is accurate perception of competing values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let both speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Summaries Can Reveal Progress<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arguments often feel endless because nobody notices what has already been resolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWe actually agree on three things now.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then name them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe agree the bill has to be paid.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe agree neither of us wants to borrow money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd we agree we&#8217;re canceling the subscription.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe only thing we&#8217;re still deciding is whether to use savings or wait until Friday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look at that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The dragon got smaller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Summaries Can Reveal the Actual Disagreement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two people may believe they disagree about everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIt sounds like both of you agree the project should continue. The disagreement is whether to delay the launch.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much smaller battlefield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Precision preserves rapport because people stop defending territory nobody was attacking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Give Them the Right to Correct the Map<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">End summaries with some version of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cDid I get that right?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat am I missing?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without it, a summary can become a declaration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With it, the summary becomes collaborative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You drew the map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hand them the pencil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don&#8217;t Summarize Too Soon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone tells you something painful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thirty seconds later:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cSo basically\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Careful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People are not always ready to have their experience compressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the telling itself matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let them tell it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Summaries are useful when complexity is obscuring meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not when efficiency is merely making you impatient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don&#8217;t Summarize Every Five Minutes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is also such a thing as too much wizardry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo what I&#8217;m hearing\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three minutes later:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLet me summarize\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three minutes later:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo the key themes\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually the other person may suspect they have accidentally entered a quarterly review.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Use the spell when the table actually has enough pieces to gather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Emotional Summary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not every summary needs facts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;ve been angry, disappointed, and mostly exhausted by having to keep dealing with this.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s the map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou sound relieved that it&#8217;s over and sad that it ended this way.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two emotions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither cancels the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A good summary can hold contradictions without trying to resolve them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Decision Summary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before making a decision, gather the current map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cSo option one costs more but gets us there sooner. Option two saves money but means waiting three months. You&#8217;re more worried about the timing; I&#8217;m more worried about the cost.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now choose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many bad decisions happen because people begin choosing before they have agreed on what the choices actually are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Ending Summary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the end of a difficult conversation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cBefore we stop, let me make sure I know what we&#8217;re doing.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou&#8217;ll call tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;ll send the document.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe&#8217;re not making the decision until Friday.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd we&#8217;re coming back to the budget this weekend.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now tomorrow does not require archaeological reconstruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conversation produced something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Summarize Yourself Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes you are the one who has been talking for fifteen minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m saying too much. The main thing I&#8217;m trying to communicate is\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beautiful spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People do not always need the entire internal machinery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Give them the handle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is especially useful when emotion makes your thoughts spread into several directions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThere are a lot of details, but the thing I most need you to understand is that I felt left out of the decision.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now they know where to look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Summary Can Be a Mirror<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something interesting sometimes happens when people hear their own situation gathered together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person spends twenty minutes explaining why they cannot possibly leave a situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You summarize fairly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHearing you say all of that back\u2026 I think I&#8217;ve already decided.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You did not persuade them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You did not add an argument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You arranged their own pieces where they could see them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes clarity was hiding in the pile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mage&#8217;s Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next time a conversation becomes complicated, stop adding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cLet me see if I&#8217;ve got this.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then name:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What is agreed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What is uncertain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What still needs deciding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep it short enough that the person can actually inspect it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat did I miss?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conversation produces fragments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Feelings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arguments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Possibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mage does not need to control them all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the most useful thing you can do is place them gently beside one another and say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Here.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This is what I think we&#8217;ve built so far.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then both of you can finally see what is sitting on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Rapport Long conversations accumulate debris.
