Someone tells you about a difficult thing they did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They were afraid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They did it anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And we say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGood job.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perfectly kind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also occasionally about as informative as giving someone a gold star for surviving a shipwreck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is another way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tell them what you saw.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Praise and Affirmation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Praise often evaluates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re amazing.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re so smart.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGood job.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Affirmation notices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou kept working on it even after the first plan failed.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou told the truth even though you knew it might cost you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou were angry, and you still chose not to say the thing you knew would hurt them.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those statements contain information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They show the person which part of their behavior mattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Name the Evidence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Suppose someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don’t think I’m very disciplined.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You could argue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes, you are.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, I’m not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes, you are.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Excellent conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’ve gotten up before work three times a week for the last two months to train.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now there is evidence on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You do not have to convince them of an identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can simply point toward something real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Affirm Effort<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Outcomes are noisy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People can make excellent decisions and still lose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They can prepare carefully and still fail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They can speak courageously and still be rejected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If affirmation only arrives when someone wins, they may begin confusing worth with outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notice the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou prepared for that interview seriously.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou went back and apologized.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou tried again after the first attempt fell apart.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou asked for help instead of pretending you knew.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These things remain true regardless of what happened afterward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Affirm Values<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes behavior reveals what someone cares about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A friend drives two hours to help their brother move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You could say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re such a good person.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFamily really matters to you. You show up.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More specific.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone refuses to gossip about a coworker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou were careful not to turn frustration into cruelty.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now you are naming a value in motion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Let People Hear Their Own Strength<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI was terrified, but I made the call.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is already an affirmation hidden inside their sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reflect it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou were terrified and called anyway.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You do not even need to add:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat was brave.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They may hear it themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the strongest affirmation simply rearranges the person’s own evidence so they can see what it contains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Don’t Inflate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is a counterfeit version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone washes one plate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYour extraordinary dedication to household stewardship is inspiring.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Affirmation loses credibility when it becomes ceremonial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Humans can smell inflated praise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If everything is extraordinary, nothing is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Name what is actually there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Small things are allowed to be small and still worthwhile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Don’t Praise People Into a Cage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re always so strong.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sounds kind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

May quietly become:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I should continue being strong.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re the responsible one.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

May become:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I cannot fall apart.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try affirming the action instead of assigning the role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou handled a lot today.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI noticed you kept everyone organized even though you were tired.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The person receives recognition without being sentenced to repeat the performance forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Affirmations Are Not Bribes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is a manipulative version of affirmation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re such a generous person\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

pause<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c\u2026so I knew you’d lend me the money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The compliment has handcuffs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re too smart to believe that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Translation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agree with me or surrender your identity as intelligent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That isn’t affirmation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s leverage wearing perfume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Notice Change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the most powerful things you can name is movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA month ago you couldn’t talk about this without shutting down. You just stayed in the conversation for twenty minutes.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou used to answer immediately when you were angry. I’ve noticed you’re giving yourself time now.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growth is often gradual enough that the person living through it cannot see it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone outside the process may be able to point toward the distance traveled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That can matter enormously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Affirm Without Stealing Ownership<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Someone succeeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You helped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Be careful with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSee? I told you that would work.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now their achievement has somehow become evidence of your wisdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou did it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let the accomplishment belong where it belongs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may have held the ladder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They climbed it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Ask Before Correcting the Self-Story<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’m a coward.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your instinct:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, you’re not.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But perhaps ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat makes you say that?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They explain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI hear that you wish you’d acted sooner. I also notice that when it mattered, you did eventually step in.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now the affirmation doesn’t erase their disappointment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It adds evidence their current story may have excluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Quiet Affirmation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes affirmation is not spoken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You trust them with responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You ask their opinion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You remember what they taught you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You hand them the tool because you know they know how to use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You stop hovering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recognition can live in behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCan you show me how you did that?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

is stronger praise than:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re really good at this.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

What You Notice Grows in the Conversation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If every conversation focuses exclusively on failures, people begin speaking about themselves through failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What went wrong?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why did you fail?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What should you fix?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the problem?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Necessary questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But incomplete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What worked?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What did you do that helped?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are you proud of?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What kept you going?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now another part of the map appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not fantasy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Mage Does Not Create the Power<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is the important part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Affirmation is not casting strength onto another person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are not enchanting them with confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The strength existed before you named it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The patience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Courage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honesty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Restraint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ingenuity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are pointing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That thing you just did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That belongs to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Mage’s Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For one day, replace one generic compliment with a specific observation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re a great friend.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou remembered I had that appointment and checked on me afterward.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re strong.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou were scared and still showed up.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re talented.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou kept adjusting until you found something that worked.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not manufacture praise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Find something true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then name it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People spend enormous portions of their lives being told what is wrong with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes useful conversation does something quieter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It notices the evidence already sitting there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The person may not believe they are brave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Disciplined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Patient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Changing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Capable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You do not have to convince them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
