There are many possible responses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Encouragement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A story about the time you were tired of trying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or you can do something deceptively simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can give them back what you heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt sounds like you’ve been carrying this for a long time.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And sometimes\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

that is the sentence that opens the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Reflection<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Reflective listening means taking what another person has said and offering your understanding back to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not repeating their exact words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not pretending to be a therapist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not mechanically saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat I hear you saying is\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

after every sentence until everyone wants to climb out a window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are checking the signal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is what reached me. Did I receive you correctly?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Parrot<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’m angry because they changed the schedule without telling me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You respond:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re angry because they changed the schedule without telling you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Technically:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reflection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spiritually:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Parrot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes simple repetition works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Usually you can do more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou planned around the schedule they gave you, and now you’re the one paying for their change.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That reaches beneath the sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe they say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cExactly.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That word matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It means you found something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Listen for Meaning<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

People rarely communicate only facts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They communicate what those facts mean.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI didn’t get invited.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Possible meanings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They forgot me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m not part of the group anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone intentionally excluded me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I thought these people were my friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m embarrassed that I cared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A good reflection listens for the layer underneath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou thought you belonged there, and now you’re wondering whether they see you the same way.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let them correct you if not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Reflection Is a Guess<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are not announcing the hidden truth of another person’s soul.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are making an informed guess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That means your tone should leave room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt sounds like\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’m wondering if\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo part of this might be\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt seems like\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These phrases leave the door unlocked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other person can say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, actually.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your reflection still worked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The map improved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Wrong Reflection Can Be Useful<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don’t care whether I get the promotion.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You notice something in their voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPart of you sounds disappointed.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo. I’m relieved.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Useful information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You were wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And now you understand them better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conversational skill is not never missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is making misses easy to correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Reflect the Feeling<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the important information is emotional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat scared you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re proud of her.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat sounds exhausting.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou seem torn.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re relieved it’s finally over.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Small sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Large effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People often continue after them because they no longer have to spend energy proving the feeling exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Reflect the Value<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Go deeper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI know the new job pays more, but I don’t want to miss my kids growing up.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You could reflect:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFamily time matters more to you than maximizing income.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now you have identified a value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou want to be someone who’s actually present for them.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deeper still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The person may pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That pause often means you touched the root.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Reflect the Conflict<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

People frequently contain two truths at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want to leave, but I keep thinking maybe things will get better.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cPart of you is ready to go, and another part isn’t ready to give up.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now neither side has been erased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is particularly powerful because humans often feel pressured to choose a position before they have finished understanding their own ambivalence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reflection lets both voices speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Reflect Strength Without Flattery<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Someone describes surviving something difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You might say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou kept showing up even when you weren’t sure it was working.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s different from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re amazing.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But specific reflections often land better than generic praise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou were scared and still made the call.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That tells them exactly what you noticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Don’t Dig Deeper Than They Invited You<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is a dangerous version of reflective listening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don’t like broccoli.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You lean forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt sounds like vegetables represent a loss of control from childhood.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Depth should emerge from evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not enthusiasm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes broccoli is broccoli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Don’t Use Reflection as a Trick<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Reflective listening is powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Which means it can be abused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Salespeople can use it to manufacture closeness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manipulators can mirror someone to lower defenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person can learn exactly what matters to someone and then use that information against them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Technique does not create ethics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mage still chooses what the magic is for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reflection should help another person become more accurately understood\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

not merely easier to steer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

You Don’t Always Need the Next Question<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI miss him.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You reflect:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYeah. You really miss him.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You do not immediately need:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen did you last speak?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow long were you together?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat happened?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the reflection itself is enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let the room breathe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People often continue when they are ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Reflection Can Slow Conflict<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

During disagreement, people frequently repeat themselves because they believe they have not been understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI know, but\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, you’re not hearing me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI heard you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, you didn’t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try demonstrating it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re saying the problem isn’t that I went out. It’s that I told you I’d be home at ten and then didn’t contact you when that changed.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may still disagree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But at least they no longer have to fight for proof that their message arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Give the Words Back Warmer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A good reflection often removes some of the thorns without changing the meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEveryone there is completely incompetent.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You might reflect:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re frustrated because you keep having to fix problems you thought other people were handling.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Same underlying message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Less fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not dishonest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not sanitizing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clarifying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are giving the meaning back in a form that may be easier for both of you to examine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Mage’s Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In your next conversation, resist the urge to immediately add something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, take one thing the person said and return the meaning you heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not every sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’ve been working on this for months and nobody even noticed.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou wanted someone to see how much you put into it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYeah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo. I wanted them to stop taking credit for it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The map sharpens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is the spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Receive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Translate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Offer it back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not as judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not as diagnosis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a lantern held between two people:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is what I think you mean.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And when you can, give the words back a little clearer\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and a little warmer.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
