{"id":701,"date":"2026-08-17T19:43:16","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T19:43:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=701"},"modified":"2026-08-18T22:11:46","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T22:11:46","slug":"leave-their-hands-on-the-wheel","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=701","title":{"rendered":"Leave Their Hands on the Wheel"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Rapport<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a very fast way to make a human being stop considering a perfectly reasonable idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tell them they <strong>have to do it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suddenly the idea itself is no longer the entire issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now there is another question in the room:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Who gets to decide what I do?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Wheel<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People protect autonomy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes wisely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes inconveniently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes with spectacular determination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou need to call your doctor.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo, I don&#8217;t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps thirty seconds earlier they were considering calling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What changed?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decision began to feel as though it had moved out of their hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So they grabbed the wheel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advice Can Sound Like Control<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine a friend tells you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m miserable at work.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You immediately say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou need to quit.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps quitting is an excellent idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But notice how quickly you traveled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They brought you a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You handed them an instruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cAre you thinking about leaving?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now they get to tell you where they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEvery day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo. I actually like the job. I just can&#8217;t stand my manager.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask Permission Before Advising<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the simplest spells in the School of Conversation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cDo you want my thoughts?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tiny sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enormous difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone may say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wonderful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Advice invited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNot yet. I just need to complain.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also wonderful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have just avoided spending ten minutes solving a problem nobody asked you to solve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Righting Reflex<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humans have a powerful instinct when we see someone doing something that seems harmful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fix it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tell them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Correct them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Persuade them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is sometimes called the <strong>righting reflex.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It comes from a good place surprisingly often.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone you love is making a mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can see the wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are walking toward the wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Naturally:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cTURN.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But when the person experiences your help as control, they may begin defending the very behavior you hoped they would reconsider.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now you are arguing for change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are arguing against it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even if they originally wanted to change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strange magic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Let Them Make the Argument<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI really should exercise more.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You could say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAbsolutely. You need to start going to the gym.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now they may explain:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;m exhausted after work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe gym is expensive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don&#8217;t have time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice what happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You became the advocate for exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They became the advocate against it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try instead:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat makes you want to exercise more?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now they tell you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI sleep better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy back hurts less.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI miss feeling strong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are making their own case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That argument tends to fit them better because it came from inside their own house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Offer a Menu, Not a Command<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes practical options are useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou should talk to her tonight.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou could talk tonight, wait until tomorrow when things are calmer, or send a message first. Which feels best to you?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have contributed ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wheel remains in their hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is especially useful when someone feels stuck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Options create movement without pretending there is only one road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Choice Must Be Real<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a counterfeit version:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWould you rather clean your room now or right now?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A decorative choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Children detect this magic quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Adults do too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If there is no real choice, don&#8217;t pretend there is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThe room needs to be cleaned before we leave.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then perhaps offer genuine choice inside the boundary:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cDo you want to do it before lunch or afterward?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boundary fixed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Method flexible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much cleaner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Autonomy Does Not Remove Consequences<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People are free to choose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are not free to choose what reality does afterward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou can decide whether to come to work tomorrow. If you don&#8217;t, the shift will count as an absence.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is not necessarily a threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may simply be information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou don&#8217;t have to tell me where you&#8217;re going. But if we&#8217;re sharing a car, I need to know when it will be available.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consequence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Boundary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don&#8217;t Hide Control Inside Questions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is another counterfeit:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cDon&#8217;t you think you should apologize?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is not much of a question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The desired answer is wearing a neon sign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cHow do you feel about what happened?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe they say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think I owe her an apology.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe they don&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now you have information rather than compliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Power of \u201cCould\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compare:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou need to\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou should\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhy don&#8217;t you\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou could\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Could is spacious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou could decide not to go.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sentence places an option on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It does not push the person&#8217;s hand toward it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">People Sometimes Want Direction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not turn autonomy into a religion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cPlease tell me what you think I should do.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Great.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tell them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf it were me, I&#8217;d leave.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cBased on what you&#8217;ve told me, I think option two is safer.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can be clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can have opinions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Autonomy-supportive conversation does not require becoming a mysterious oracle who only answers questions with questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes people want the map you have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Give it to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just remember:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are still traveling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Hardest Version<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone you love is choosing something you believe is a mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You explain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They choose it anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where autonomy stops being a pleasant conversational technique and becomes a genuine discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI think this is a bad idea.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI understand it&#8217;s your decision.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both can be true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are not required to approve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may set boundaries around how their choice affects you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But another adult&#8217;s life does not become yours merely because you can see a danger they cannot\u2014or will not\u2014avoid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask What They Want From You<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When uncertain:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat would be useful from me right now?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Advice?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Listening?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Help making a plan?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A ride?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A second opinion?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone to sit nearby while they make the phone call?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excellent question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It prevents a remarkable amount of unwanted wizardry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mage&#8217;s Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next time someone brings you a problem, notice the moment when your mind produces:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Here is what they should do.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not throw the thought away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may be excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just hold it for a second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Do they want my solution?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWant an idea?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If yes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Offer it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then let go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can illuminate a road without dragging someone down it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can warn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suggest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Teach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Invite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can even say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI think you&#8217;re making a mistake.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But when the choice truly belongs to
