That&#8217;s fantastic!\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You entered their emotional world for a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humans often experience this as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You understand how significant this is to me.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Matching Is Not Mimicking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If someone is crying, you do not need to cry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If someone is furious, you do not need to become furious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If someone is whispering, you do not need to mysteriously begin whispering too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is not imitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is <strong>calibration.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI just found out they&#8217;re closing the entire department.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Response:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHuh. Anyway\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wrong weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhoa. The entire department?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now you&#8217;re present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have met the magnitude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Anger Requires Special Handling<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone enters hot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voice raised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fast speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strong language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have several choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Match them exactly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now there are two fires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remain unnaturally calm:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI understand that you are experiencing frustration.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now there is one fire and one customer-service robot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or meet them somewhat closer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYeah. I can see why you&#8217;re angry. That&#8217;s a serious problem.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have acknowledged the heat without becoming combustible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Come Down Together<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where emotional matching becomes useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may meet someone near their intensity\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">then gradually lower yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are speaking quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You respond with energy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then slightly slower.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Slightly quieter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More space between sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not as a trick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As regulation offered through the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humans often calibrate to each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One nervous system can invite another toward steadier ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don&#8217;t Tell People to Calm Down<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Few spells have such consistently impressive failure rates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cCalm down.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The person who was previously at seven is now at nine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because they often hear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Your reaction is the problem.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try addressing the thing producing the reaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI can see this hit you hard. Tell me what happened.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cOkay. This is serious. Let&#8217;s figure out what we know.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are giving the energy somewhere to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Too Much Calm Can Become Dominance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a kind of exaggerated composure people sometimes use during conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Slow smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soft voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perfect posture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the other person is visibly upset.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can communicate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Look how rational I am. I think I&#8217;m being too analytical right now. This really hurt you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That single sentence can restore a connection surprisingly quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Celebration Is Rapport Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We often think these skills are only for conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They aren&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone brings you something they&#8217;re proud of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone tells you they finished something difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let the achievement have weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone shows you a strange rock they found.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the rock is, objectively speaking, a rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But they are glowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look at the rock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cOh, that&#8217;s actually beautiful.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes love is astonishingly simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Look what I found.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And you look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don&#8217;t Steal the Weather<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone tells you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;ve had the worst day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You respond:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou think that&#8217;s bad? Listen to mine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Weather theft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI finally ran five miles.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOh, I used to run ten.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Weather theft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may have relevant experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But let their weather exist first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cFive miles? That&#8217;s huge.
