difference between saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat was selfish.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou are selfish.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They sound similar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One describes a behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other builds a box and puts a person inside it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Behavior Is Small Enough to Change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose someone interrupts you repeatedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You could say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;ve interrupted me three times while I&#8217;ve been trying to explain this.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That gives them something remarkably useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something observable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something they can stop doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compare:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re incredibly disrespectful.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now what?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How does one stop being incredibly disrespectful?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which lever do we pull?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where is the switch?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The criticism has moved from something the person <strong>did<\/strong> to something the person <strong>is.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That makes repair much harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Box<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humans build boxes quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lazy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Selfish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Controlling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dramatic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Insensitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arrogant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unreliable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Needy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once somebody enters the box, everything they do begins looking like evidence that they belong there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They forget to call.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Unreliable.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They call twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Needy.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They disagree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Difficult.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They stay quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Passive-aggressive.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interesting box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apparently there is no exit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Describe the Camera Footage<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One useful discipline is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Say what a camera could have recorded.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not always literally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But close.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou didn&#8217;t care what I was saying.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou looked at your phone several times while I was talking.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first requires knowledge of their internal state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second describes something that happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then add your experience:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI started feeling like I didn&#8217;t have your attention.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now we have useful pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No psychic powers required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Interpretation Still Matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This doesn&#8217;t mean interpretation is forbidden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humans need interpretation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patterns matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Character matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Intent matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But separating observation from interpretation gives both people somewhere to work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou canceled our last three plans on the same day. I&#8217;m starting to feel like I can&#8217;t rely on plans we make.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Very different from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re unreliable.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conclusion may eventually be the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But now the road to that conclusion is visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Identity Creates Defense<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tell someone:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou lied to me about where you went.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may defend the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tell them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re a liar.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now they may defend their entire life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don&#8217;t lie!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat about this?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat was different.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat about last year?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou misunderstood that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suddenly the original lie has summoned every testimony from the archives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Of course it has.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You put their identity on trial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leave Room for the Better Version<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Behavioral language quietly communicates something important:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You could do something different next time.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou raised your voice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Can change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou didn&#8217;t tell me the plan changed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Can change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou made the decision without asking me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Can change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou&#8217;re inconsiderate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person can repair an action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Repairing an identity requires an exorcism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Positive Boxes Exist Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This spell cuts both ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re the responsible one.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sounds lovely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until the responsible one is exhausted and afraid to ask for help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re the strong one.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until strength becomes a prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re the smart one.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until being wrong becomes terrifying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even flattering identities can become boxes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it is kinder to praise the thing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou handled that responsibly.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than assigning the person a permanent role they must now maintain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Patterns Are Real<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is an obvious objection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What if someone really does this constantly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At some point behavior becomes pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are allowed to name patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;ve canceled at the last minute five times in the past two months. This has become a pattern, and it&#8217;s affecting whether I&#8217;m willing to make plans.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No need to pretend each event exists in isolation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But notice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can still describe the pattern without claiming to possess the final definition of the human being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sometimes the Box Is Your Boundary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There may come a point where your conclusion matters primarily for your own decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps someone has repeatedly lied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You no longer trust them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not need to convince them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou are a liar.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may simply decide:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI don&#8217;t trust what you tell me anymore, so I&#8217;m changing what I rely on you for.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is an important distinction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not always need agreement about someone&#8217;s character before acting on the pattern you have observed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your boundary does not require their confession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don&#8217;t Accept Every Box Offered to You<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re selfish.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before spending forty minutes defending your soul, ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat did I do that you&#8217;re calling selfish?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bring the conversation back down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe they say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou wouldn&#8217;t lend me $500.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now we have an event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can discuss that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps your answer remains:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI understand that you&#8217;re angry I wouldn&#8217;t lend you the money. I&#8217;m still not lending it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No trial of your entire moral character required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">People Are Larger Than Their Worst Moment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This matters most when someone genuinely behaves badly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person can do something cruel without cruelty being the only thing they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person can act cowardly without becoming Coward forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person can lie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Betray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Panic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Freeze.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Break something precious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of this requires pretending the behavior was acceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It means remembering that a human being is larger than one frame of film.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Accountability does not require reducing someone to the worst thing you can accurately say about them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mage&#8217;s Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Listen for the sentence:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou are\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Especially during conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask whether what follows describes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or a behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If it is really the behavior you need changed, name the behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhen this happens\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThe last three times\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat I saw was\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat I need differently is\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Give the other person something they can actually work with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And demand the same precision when necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are not required to climb inside every identity another person constructs for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humans are complicated creatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Contradictory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Changing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Capable of behaving beautifully in one moment and terribly in another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So when correction is necessary, correct what can be corrected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Name the action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Name the pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Name the consequence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But whenever possible\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>don&#8217;t put the whole person in the box.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Rapport There is an enormous difference between saying: \u201cThat was selfish.\u201d and: \u201cYou are selfish.\u201d They sound similar.
