School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Rapport<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Disagreement creates a strange temptation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone says something you strongly disagree with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your mind immediately begins preparing the correction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But underneath the words, another question may already be forming:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are we still okay?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are we going to agree?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something more basic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can I disagree with you and remain welcome here?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can you correct me without treating me like an enemy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can we have different maps without burning the bridge between us?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the territory of rapport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Rapport Is Not Agreement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

People sometimes confuse getting along with agreeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are not the same spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can have excellent rapport with someone whose conclusions are very different from yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can also agree completely with someone you cannot stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rapport is closer to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The quality of the connection through which the conversation is traveling.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When rapport is strong, disagreement can move across the bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When rapport collapses, even ordinary sentences begin arriving armed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Acknowledge Without Agreeing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the most useful conversational spells is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI understand why you see it that way.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notice what this does not say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It does not say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re right.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Understanding is not agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suppose someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think taking the promotion would be a mistake. You’ll never see your family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You disagree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You might respond:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI understand why you’re worried about that. The hours are one of the things I’ve been considering too.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their concern has been received.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI still think taking the position is the right decision.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Three Different Spells<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

These are often confused:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I heard you.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I understand you.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I agree with you.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are not interchangeable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can hear an argument without understanding it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can understand an argument without agreeing with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can even agree with an argument and still choose differently because another concern matters more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mage learns to know which spell they are actually casting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Demonstrate Understanding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI understand.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

is easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes suspiciously easy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A stronger version shows what you understood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt sounds like you’re less worried about the money itself and more worried that taking the job means I’ll be gone most weekends.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now the other person can say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, that’s not it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Either answer improves the map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Steelman<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is a useful discipline in disagreement:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before criticizing someone’s position, see whether you can describe it in a way they would recognize as fair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not the stupidest version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not the easiest version to defeat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their actual position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imagine:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou want everyone to work from home because you’re lazy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Probably not excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou think the flexibility is worth some loss of in-person coordination because people are more productive when they can manage their own environment. Is that roughly your position?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now disagree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are finally fighting the correct dragon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Agreement Has Levels<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You may agree with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The facts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But not the interpretation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But not the proposed solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But not the method.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The principle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But not its application here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This creates enormous room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI agree that we need to reduce spending. I don’t agree that canceling the trip is the best place to start.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI agree that what she did was harmful. I don’t agree that she intended to hurt you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI want the same outcome. I think your plan creates another problem.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Disagreement becomes more precise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Precision usually reduces unnecessary war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Find the Shared Ground<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes two people are fighting from the same value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One parent says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe needs consequences.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHe needs support.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At first:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opposition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But perhaps both are trying to raise a child who learns responsibility without becoming afraid to ask for help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shared ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That does not solve the disagreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It changes its shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now the question becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What combination of support and consequence best serves the thing we both care about?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Much better battlefield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Don’t Manufacture Common Ground<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes you genuinely disagree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deeply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There may be no beautiful hidden unity waiting underneath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not invent one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe both just want what’s best.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps you have fundamentally different ideas about what best<\/em> means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Forced harmony can feel more dishonest than open disagreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rapport does not require pretending differences are smaller than they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes respect sounds like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI understand your position. I don’t share it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Clean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Threat of Being Understood<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is an interesting reason people sometimes resist acknowledgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They fear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If I show that I understand you, you’ll think you’ve convinced me.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So they refuse to acknowledge anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other person explains harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You defend harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They explain harder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both people become exhausted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think I understand your argument. I’m just not persuaded by it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strangely calming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other person no longer has to keep repeating themselves in hopes that comprehension will finally occur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They were heard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The disagreement remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Let Them Correct Your Understanding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Suppose you summarize:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo you’re saying you don’t trust me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They respond:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo. I’m saying I don’t trust this plan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Important distinction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not argue:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat’s basically the same thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You asked for their meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They corrected the map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Use the correction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOkay. You trust me. You don’t trust the plan.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Acknowledgment Can Be Very Small<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You don’t always need a paragraph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI see your point.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat makes sense.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI can see why you’d think that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFair.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI hadn’t considered that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tiny spells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The important thing is sincerity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI see your point.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

when what you mean is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please stop talking so I can explain why you’re wrong.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

People can often feel the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Rapport Does Not Require Self-Erasure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is a dangerous version of relationship preservation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agree with everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Never correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Never challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Never say no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep everyone comfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is not rapport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is disappearance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A bridge is useful because two sides remain.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If one side dissolves into the river, we no longer have a bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You remain allowed to have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Opinions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interpretations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rapport helps those things travel without unnecessary damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It does not require surrendering them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Mage’s Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The next time you disagree with someone, delay your counterargument for a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What part of their position can I genuinely understand?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not necessarily agree with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then demonstrate it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf I thought what you think happened, I’d probably be angry too.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI understand why that option feels safer to you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or simply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI hear what you’re saying.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then disagree where disagreement actually exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may discover that much of the fight was never about the disagreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was about whether either person could remain visible while disagreeing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t have to extinguish your position to preserve connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep the conviction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep the fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just learn when the conversation does not require quite so much flame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
