invitations constantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A question is an invitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An accusation is an invitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A joke can be an invitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So can a strange comment from someone you barely know while standing in line for coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The important thing to remember is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>An invitation is not a summons.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not have to enter every conversation offered to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Reflex to Answer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone asks you a question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your brain immediately begins producing an answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This happens so quickly that we often miss the decision entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow much money do you make?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brain:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Well, approximately\u2014<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why are we answering this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are allowed to stop before the machinery completes the sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Questions Do Not Create Debts<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine someone asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhy aren&#8217;t you married yet?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps you enjoy discussing that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps you don&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI keep that part of my life private.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat&#8217;s a long story I&#8217;m not getting into today.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or simply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;d rather not talk about that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing has gone wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A question was offered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You declined it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Hook<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not every invitation looks like a question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes someone throws out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cPeople who believe that are idiots.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A hook floating in the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You happen to believe that thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your nervous system notices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You could bite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is an underrated conversational skill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You can hear bait without becoming fish.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Silence Is an Answer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humans are uncomfortable with conversational empty space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says something provocative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The silence grows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now they may explain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clarify.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Withdraw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Change the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or become even more provocative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Either way, information appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You did not have to supply it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silence is not always passive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it is simply refusing to perform the expected move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Answer the Part You Choose<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some questions contain several layers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhy did you leave the party early? Was it because Mara was there?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe you&#8217;re comfortable answering the first question but not the second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI was tired, so I went home early.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t have to address Mara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If they ask again:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWas it because of Mara?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now you can decide whether that room is open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Declining Is Different From Dodging<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This distinction matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose your partner asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cDid you spend the rent money?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI don&#8217;t feel like discussing finances.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That may not be topic management.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That may be evasion of information they have a legitimate stake in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Privacy and accountability are not identical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mage asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Does this person reasonably need this information because my choices affect them?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If yes, refusal may carry consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You still possess agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But agency does not erase responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You Can Decline the Frame<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhich one of us do you think is the better parent?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m not going to rank you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have not refused conversation entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You&#8217;ve refused the offered structure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe you continue:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIf you&#8217;re worried about something you&#8217;re doing as a parent, I&#8217;ll talk about that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another road appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You Can Decline the Audience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the topic is fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The setting isn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone asks a personal question at dinner in front of eight people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;ll talk to you about that privately.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cNot here.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Complete spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A boundary does not become more legitimate because it contains three paragraphs of justification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You Can Decline the Timing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI will talk about this. Just not while I&#8217;m walking out the door.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s different from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI refuse to discuss it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Timing is part of conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So is capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may have the willingness for a difficult discussion tomorrow and absolutely none at 1:13 in the morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do Not Invent Reasons<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People sometimes weaken a boundary by manufacturing an excuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI can&#8217;t talk because\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the reason becomes negotiable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOh, that won&#8217;t take long.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI can help with that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe can talk while you do it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your beautiful escape tunnel has collapsed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the truthful reason is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI don&#8217;t want to discuss that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This can feel impolite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is also wonderfully difficult to troubleshoot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Cost of Not Answering<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Refusal does not guarantee a consequence-free interaction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone may think you&#8217;re rude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suspicious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Private.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may decide your refusal itself tells them something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You cannot completely control their interpretation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Decline perfectly so nobody feels anything about it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Choose deliberately what you participate in.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other people retain their agency too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Curiosity Is Not Entitlement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People may genuinely care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may be fascinated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may be trying to understand you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those are good things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Curiosity does not create ownership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone can sincerely want to know something you sincerely do not want to share.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No villain required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mage&#8217;s Attention Is Finite<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is another kind of refusal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not privacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone wants to debate a topic you have debated fifty times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone sends an article and expects a response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone makes a provocative claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone wants you to explain your worldview from first principles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may simply decide:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I am not spending mana on this.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because you couldn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because attention is a resource.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Where you place it shapes your life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mage&#8217;s Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For one day, notice the moment between being invited into a conversation and entering it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone asks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone provokes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone opens a door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Feel the reflex:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Respond.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then remember:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a choice there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask a question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Redirect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Decline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remain silent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cNot now.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cNot here.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI don&#8217;t discuss that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or happily walk through the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The point is not to become guarded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The point is to remember that conversation is participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And participation requires choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not need a fortress around yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t need to nail every door shut.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But you are allowed to decide which doors open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because not every
