Some questions contain their own answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not openly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They hide them inside the walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy are you being so selfish?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interesting question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before you answer, notice what you have already agreed to if you step through the doorway:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are being selfish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The only remaining mystery is why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Loaded Question<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A loaded question contains an assumption that has not yet been established.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy don’t you care about this family?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen are you going to start taking your work seriously?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy do you always need to control everything?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHave you finally stopped lying?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you answer directly, you may accidentally accept the hidden premise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI care because\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Too late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You entered through the crooked doorway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Find the Hidden Premise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Before answering, separate the question into pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy are you avoiding responsibility?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Visible question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hidden claim:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are avoiding responsibility.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now you can decide whether you agree with that claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re right. I have been avoiding it because I’m overwhelmed.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But perhaps you don’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the premise itself needs attention first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Refuse the Premise, Not the Person<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A clean response might be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don’t agree that I’m avoiding responsibility.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then perhaps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf you want to talk about the fact that I haven’t finished the report, we can talk about that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notice what happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You did not answer the loaded question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You also did not flee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You replaced the crooked doorway with a straight one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Translate the Accusation Into an Event<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy are you trying to control me?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of immediately defending your entire character:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat am I doing that feels controlling to you?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now the conversation has to come down from abstraction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou keep asking where I’m going.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is something observable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now you can discuss whether asking is reasonable, excessive, anxious, necessary, or none of those things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have something to work with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the Premise Is Partly True<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Loaded questions are not automatically false.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy are you refusing to listen?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps you have interrupted six times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There may be a coin in there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI agree that I’ve been interrupting you. I don’t think I’m refusing to listen. Finish what you were saying.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take what belongs to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Leave what doesn’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Trap of Defending Too Much<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Suppose someone asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy are you so obsessed with money?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You respond with a fifteen-minute explanation proving that you are not obsessed with money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now money has somehow acquired fifteen minutes of evidence demonstrating its importance to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the stronger response is shorter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don’t think I am.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other person may then provide evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now you have something real to discuss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You do not have to construct a cathedral of defense around every accusation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Ask for the Straight Question<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the most useful spells is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCan you ask me what you actually want to know?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy don’t you trust me?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAre you asking whether I checked your phone?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOkay. Ask me that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDid you check my phone?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Straight doorway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Much easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Beware the Counter-Trap<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Once you recognize loaded questions, you may become very clever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dangerously clever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy were you late?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You announce:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat’s a loaded question.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You were forty minutes late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The premise is visible from space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not every uncomfortable question is loaded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes you simply don’t like the answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not use conversational technique to turn accountability into a philosophy seminar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Loaded Compliments Exist Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Not every hidden premise is hostile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow did you get so good at talking to people?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hidden premise:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are good at talking to people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lovely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still an assumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe you disagree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow do you stay so calm?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps you don’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can correct gently:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI actually don’t always stay calm. I’ve just practiced noticing it sooner.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even flattering premises can distort reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mage does not need to accept every crown offered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Questions Can Smuggle Choices<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Another crooked doorway:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDo you want to apologize now or after dinner?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have skipped:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether you believe you owe an apology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAre you going to tell her, or should I?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBefore we decide who tells her, I want to decide whether she needs to be told.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Back up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Find the hidden fork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Your Own Questions Have Premises Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This spell becomes much more interesting when turned inward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Listen to yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy are you ignoring me?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you know they are?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy are you angry?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do you know they are?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy don’t you want to come?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps they do want to come and cannot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI noticed you haven’t answered my messages. Is something going on?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou seem angry to me. Am I reading that correctly?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The doorway straightens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other person gets room to tell you what room they are actually standing in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Mage’s Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When a question makes you feel strangely trapped, don’t immediately search for an answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inspect the doorway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What would I have to accept as true in order to answer this question as written?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you accept the premise:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you don’t:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Say so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then find the actual issue underneath it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don’t agree with that description. What happened that made you see it that way?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now the conversation has somewhere honest to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not every doorway placed in front of you leads to a room you need to enter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some were built crooked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t have to kick them down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t have to run away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the Mage simply looks at the frame and says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo. Let’s build the question again.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
