{"id":683,"date":"2026-08-17T18:29:12","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T18:29:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=683"},"modified":"2026-08-18T22:11:47","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T22:11:47","slug":"turn-the-river","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=683","title":{"rendered":"Turn the River"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Direction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes you do not want to continue down the road a conversation has taken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because the subject is forbidden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because you have been defeated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because you are hiding something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You simply recognize:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This is not where I want this conversation to go.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So you change direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trick is doing it without pretending the previous direction never existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Redirection Is Already Happening<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People sometimes become suspicious of the idea of \u201csteering\u201d conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It sounds manipulative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But conversation is constantly being steered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone asks a question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Direction changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone tells a joke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Direction changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone becomes quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Direction changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat reminds me\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There goes the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is not whether conversation will be influenced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is whether you can influence it deliberately <strong>without treating the other person like cargo.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Touch Before You Turn<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI can&#8217;t believe you&#8217;re still working there. That place sounds terrible.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t particularly want to spend twenty minutes defending your job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A hard turn:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cSo what are you doing this weekend?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Obvious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYeah, work has been complicated. I&#8217;m trying not to make every conversation about it, though. How has your week been?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You touched the topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then turned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The movement feels natural because nothing had to disappear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Name the Turn<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes subtlety is unnecessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;d rather change the subject.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perfectly legal spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI don&#8217;t really want to get into that tonight.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat&#8217;s something I&#8217;m still thinking through. Can we talk about something else?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Graceful redirection does not always require cleverness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes clarity is graceful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Redirect Toward Something<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A weak redirect merely escapes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A strong redirect has a destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cLet&#8217;s not talk about this.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;d rather talk about what we&#8217;re going to do next.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cCan we stop discussing the mistake?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI think we understand what went wrong. I&#8217;d like to spend the rest of the meeting figuring out how we prevent it next time.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mage doesn&#8217;t merely dam the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mage gives it another channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Redirect the Level, Not the Subject<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the topic is fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The level isn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone starts discussing a political issue by insulting everyone who disagrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You might say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m willing to talk about the policy. I&#8217;m not interested in sorting everyone into idiots and heroes.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Same subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different terrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m happy to talk about what happened. I don&#8217;t want to speculate about what she secretly intended.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Same river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Better channel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Redirect From Person to Problem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A powerful turn is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat do we actually need to solve?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou&#8217;re careless.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThe shipment went to the wrong address. Let&#8217;s figure out where the address entered the system incorrectly.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This does not mean nobody is responsible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Responsibility may matter later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But turning from character judgment toward the mechanism can make useful information appear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Redirect From Past to Future<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes everyone understands what happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet the conversation remains trapped there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou should have called.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou knew I&#8217;d be worried.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo why didn&#8217;t you call?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;ve explained that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI think we understand what I did wrong. Can we talk about what you want me to do next time?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Past:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Future:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But they perform different jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Redirect From Heat to Specificity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou don&#8217;t care about anything.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than defending your entire capacity for caring:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat happened today that made you feel that way?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conversation moves from character to event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cNobody respects me here.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turn:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWho specifically did something that felt disrespectful?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Large emotional claims become workable when given edges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Obvious Evasion<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a boundary here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose someone asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cDid you spend the rent money?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And you say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI think the larger issue is how controlling you are about finances.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Answer the question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Redirection becomes evasive when it is used to avoid information the other person reasonably needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can answer and still redirect afterward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYes. I spent $300 of it. That was wrong. We need to deal with that first. Afterward, I do want to talk about how we make financial decisions together.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now both topics survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You Are Allowed to Decline<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But not every question deserves an answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy did your marriage end?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI keep that private. Tell me about the trip you mentioned.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No apology required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t owe every person access to every room simply because they knocked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Topic management includes doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When Someone Refuses the Turn<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You redirect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You redirect again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They return again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At that point, stop pretending the problem is navigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI notice you keep coming back to this. Is there a reason it&#8217;s important to you?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe there is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the topic needs attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI understand you want to discuss it. I don&#8217;t.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the boundary is visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No amount of elegant steering substitutes for saying no when no is the actual answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Gentle Turn<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some of the most elegant redirects barely feel like redirects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat&#8217;s part of it. The piece I&#8217;m more interested in is\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI can see that. What I&#8217;m wondering is\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat makes sense. It also raises another question\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cBefore we go further there, I want to look at\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tiny movements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A river rarely turns ninety degrees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It curves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mage&#8217;s Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice the next time you want a conversation to go somewhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before changing direction, ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Am I redirecting because another direction would be more useful?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Am I redirecting because I don&#8217;t want to answer something?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither automatically tells you what to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes avoiding a question is appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it isn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But know which spell you&#8217;re casting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acknowledge where you are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Choose where you&#8217;re going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Create the connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is not to secretly drag another person into the conversation you wanted all along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They remain free to notice the turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Question it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Refuse it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suggest another direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s why this is conversational magic rather than mind control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are not moving the other person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are changing the path available between you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The river was already moving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the Mage simply places a hand in the water\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and helps it turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Direction Sometimes you do not want to continue down the road a conversation has taken.
