School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Direction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Some arguments contain too many dragons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You begin with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou forgot to call me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And within six minutes you are also discussing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vacation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your work schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something that happened at a wedding four years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And a mysterious incident involving a lasagna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every one of these things may be important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is precisely the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Battlefield Gets Crowded<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When several disagreements happen simultaneously, each person begins grabbing evidence from whichever problem is nearby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou forgot to call.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, you forgot to pay the bill.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat does that have to do with anything?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt has everything to do with it. I can’t rely on you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou can’t rely on me? What about the airport?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe airport? You’re bringing up the airport?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dragons are breeding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually nobody knows what victory would even look like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is where the Mage narrows the field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

One Question<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A useful spell is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat’s the one thing we’re trying to resolve right now?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not the entire relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not whether someone is fundamentally trustworthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not whether the last ten years were worthwhile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDid we agree that you’d call if you were going to be late?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Small enough to hold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now work there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Narrowing Is Not Minimizing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Be careful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis isn’t just about tonight. This keeps happening.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And you respond:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe’re only talking about tonight.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That may erase the pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI hear that you think there’s a larger pattern. I want to understand that too. Can we start with what happened tonight so I can see it clearly?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The larger dragon remains real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You’re simply choosing which part of it to approach first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Separate the Claims<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A sentence can secretly contain several arguments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou didn’t call because you don’t respect me and you never think about anyone but yourself.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n
  1. You didn’t call.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  2. The reason was disrespect.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  3. This behavior is part of a pattern.<\/li>\n\n\n\n
  4. You are generally selfish.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Four claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Trying to answer all four simultaneously is difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    So separate them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cI agree that I didn’t call. I don’t agree that it was because I don’t respect you. Can we deal with those separately?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Now the battlefield has boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    Ask Which Dragon Matters Most<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Sometimes several problems genuinely need attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Let the other person choose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cYou’ve mentioned the money, the schedule, and what happened with your sister. Which of those is most important to you right now?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This does two things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    It narrows the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    And it gives the other person agency over the direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Perhaps you assumed the money was the major issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    They say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cMy sister.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Now you know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    Don’t Summon Reinforcements<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    There is a common argument spell:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Evidence Avalanche.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Someone makes one complaint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    You produce twelve counterexamples.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    They produce fifteen examples of their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Soon both sides are commanding armies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Resist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    If the current example is enough to understand the issue, stay with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    You don’t need every witness in the kingdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Sometimes one clean event teaches more than twenty blurry ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    The Word \u201cAlways\u201d<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Always<\/strong> is a dragon summoner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    So is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Never.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cYou always dismiss me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Now every interaction you’ve ever had is potentially evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cYou dismissed what I said twice tonight.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Much smaller creature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Perhaps still unpleasant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    But observable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Specificity reduces the amount of territory everyone has to defend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    Character Is a Very Large Dragon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Be especially careful when behavior becomes identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cYou lied.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    may describe an event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cYou are a liar.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    describes a person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cYou acted selfishly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    may describe a choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cYou are selfish.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    describes a character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Sometimes patterns do justify larger conclusions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    But once the conversation becomes a trial of someone’s entire identity, every example becomes existential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Of course they defend themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    You aren’t discussing Tuesday anymore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    You’re discussing whether they are a good person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Huge dragon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    Shrink the Quest<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Sometimes the problem itself is too large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cWe need to fix our communication.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Wonderful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    How?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cFor the next week, can we agree that if either of us needs space during an argument, we say when we’re coming back?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Now there is something to practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cWe need to fix the company.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Perhaps start with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cWho approves invoices?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Great quests are often completed through embarrassingly specific tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    When the Small Problem Reveals the Large One<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Narrowing is not denial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    You may examine one incident carefully and discover:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Oh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    This really is a pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Now expand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cWe’ve looked at tonight, and I think you’re right that this is happening repeatedly. Let’s talk about the pattern.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Mage can zoom in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The Mage can zoom out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The skill is knowing which view is useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    Finish Before Summoning the Next Dragon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    Once you resolve something, let it be resolved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Do not immediately say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cFine. But what about\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    One thing actually ended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Notice that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Then decide whether another topic needs attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    A conversation does not become more legitimate because it lasts until everyone is exhausted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Sometimes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    One dragon slain. Dinner.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    The others will still be there tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Dragons are reliable that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \n\n\n\n

    The Mage’s Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

    When an argument begins expanding, count the problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Literally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cI think we’re talking about four things.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Then name them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cThe missed call.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cWhether this keeps happening.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cThe trust issue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cAnd whether we’re still going on the trip.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Look at the list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Then ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    \u201cWhich one first?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

    That question can transform chaos into a map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    You do not need to defeat every creature in the forest simultaneously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    You need enough clarity to know what is standing in front of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Choose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Stay with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Learn what it actually is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Then, when that work is finished, decide whether you still need the others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    There may be seven dragons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    One dragon at a time.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
