{"id":675,"date":"2026-08-17T18:24:40","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T18:24:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=675"},"modified":"2026-08-18T22:11:47","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T22:11:47","slug":"set-it-on-the-shelf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=675","title":{"rendered":"Set It on the Shelf"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Direction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some topics arrive at exactly the wrong time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may be important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may be urgent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may deserve a real conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They simply do not belong <strong>inside this conversation right now.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where the Mage learns to put something down without throwing it away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Unexpected Guest<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine discussing whether to repair the car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThis is exactly like when you spent all that money on the kitchen.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The kitchen has arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The kitchen may contain legitimate grievances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps terrible decisions were made in the kitchen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps one day there should be a tribunal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But right now the car is smoking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have a choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Follow the kitchen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI hear that the kitchen is part of why you don&#8217;t trust this decision. I want to come back to that. Can we finish deciding what we&#8217;re doing about the car first?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The kitchen has not been dismissed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has been placed somewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Topic Parking<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Topic parking means deliberately setting aside a subject with the intention of returning to it later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The important word is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>deliberately.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not ignoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not dodging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe&#8217;ll talk about it sometime.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spell works because you make the parking visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat&#8217;s important, and I don&#8217;t think we can do both topics well at once.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cCan we put that aside until we finish this?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now everyone knows where the topic went.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why Conversations Multiply<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One disagreement often contains twelve others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou didn&#8217;t call.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause last time I called you said I was checking up on you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat was after you called six times.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause you disappeared.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI told you where I was going.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo, you told Mara.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat should have been enough.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suddenly archaeologists are required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each statement opens another chamber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually nobody remembers which ruin they entered first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Topic parking lets you say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>One room at a time.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Give the Topic a Name<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This helps enormously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe&#8217;ll deal with that later.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cLet&#8217;s call that the trust issue.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat&#8217;s the question about how we handle money.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI think that&#8217;s a separate conversation about your mother.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Naming creates a handle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now when it returns:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cOkay. We finished the schedule question. Do you want to go back to the trust issue?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The topic was not abandoned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was stored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Write It Down<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For complicated conversations, literally write it down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This can feel absurdly formal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine a meeting where people keep raising legitimate side issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of chasing each one:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>PARKING LOT<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>staffing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>budget<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>launch date<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>training<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>who keeps stealing Mara&#8217;s yogurt<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now people can see that their concern has not vanished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The yogurt thief will face justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Parking Requires Trust<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a reason people resist this technique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may have experienced:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWe&#8217;ll talk about it later.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">as another way of saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI would like this problem to disappear.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you have a history of never returning to parked topics, the other person may reasonably refuse to park another one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You rebuild that trust by returning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYesterday I asked if we could put the money conversation aside. I said we&#8217;d come back to it tonight. I&#8217;m ready.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That sentence makes future parking easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You proved the shelf exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don&#8217;t Park Everything Uncomfortable<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a counterfeit version of this spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every difficult topic gets shelved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe&#8217;re tired.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have company.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt&#8217;s almost dinner.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe moon is in an unfavorable position.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually the shelf contains the entire relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Parking is temporary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Avoidance is indefinite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A useful question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>When exactly are we coming back?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not always a clock time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAfter the kids are asleep.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOnce we get the estimate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAfter I calm down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there should usually be some condition that brings the topic back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Some Topics Really Are Separate<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humans often bundle issues because they share emotional flavor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou forgot my birthday, and you never clean the bathroom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps both make someone feel unappreciated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But they may require completely different solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Birthday:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bathroom:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A sponge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Separating topics can make both easier to solve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Some Topics Should Not Be Separated<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Careful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes what looks like a side issue is actually the pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou were late again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLet&#8217;s only discuss today.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But if someone has been late twelve times, refusing to discuss the pattern may artificially shrink the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Topic management should create clarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not prevent context from appearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mage asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Is this a separate topic, or is this evidence about the topic we&#8217;re already discussing?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Return Before You Are Reminded<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the strongest ways to build conversational trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cCan we set that aside until tomorrow?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tomorrow comes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You bring it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without prompting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other person learns:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>When this person asks to postpone something, they are not necessarily trying to escape it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It gives both of you more freedom to manage difficult conversations without treating every pause as abandonment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Shelf Can Hold Emotion Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes you cannot solve something immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You receive bad news at work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You&#8217;re angry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But you&#8217;re about to pick up your child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You might tell yourself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m angry. I&#8217;m not solving this now. I&#8217;m coming back to it tonight.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s a kind of internal topic parking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not suppression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The emotion has been acknowledged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conversation with yourself has been scheduled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mage does not need to cast every spell the moment the component appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mage&#8217;s Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next time a conversation suddenly produces three additional conversations, stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Name them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI think we have three things here.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then list them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe thing that happened tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe older trust problem.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAnd what we&#8217;re going to do tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhich one are we actually working on right now?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Put the others somewhere visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Return to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conversation becomes much easier when every important thing does not have to happen simultaneously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A subject can matter enormously and still wait twenty minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Setting something aside does not mean saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This doesn&#8217;t matter.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it means saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This matters enough that I don&#8217;t want it buried underneath everything else.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Put it somewhere safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finish what you&#8217;re doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then take it back down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Direction Some topics arrive at exactly the wrong time.
