School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Direction<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Conversations do not move in straight lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They wander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A story reminds someone of another story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A question opens three other questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A complaint reveals an older complaint hiding underneath it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone mentions a dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suddenly you’re discussing someone’s mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody knows exactly how you got there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But sometimes you actually need the conversation to go somewhere<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then it helps to learn where the hinges are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Bridge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A bridge is a conversational move that acknowledges where the conversation currently is and connects it to where you need it to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The simplest version looks like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Acknowledge. Connect. Redirect.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis whole project has been a mess from the beginning.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You could argue about whether the whole project has actually been a mess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere have definitely been problems. One of the things that would help now is figuring out who owns the next step.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You did not ignore their statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You did not necessarily agree with all of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You found a piece of ground sturdy enough to build from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then moved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Bad Teleport<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Without a bridge, redirection can feel evasive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy were you late?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnyway, did you get the groceries?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have teleported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other person will probably notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And now the conversation contains two problems:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why were you late?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And why are you avoiding the question?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A bridge prevents the teleport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTraffic was worse than I expected, and I should have messaged you. Speaking of the trip home, I did get the groceries.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

You Usually Need to Touch the Ground First<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

People resist redirection when they feel the thing they said has been discarded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imagine:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’m worried we’re spending too much money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe should really talk about the vacation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those topics may be related.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the first statement disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYeah, I think we should look at the budget. The vacation is actually part of why I wanted to talk about it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now the first concern remains present while the conversation changes direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You touched the ground before stepping elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

A Bridge Does Not Require Agreement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can bridge from something you disagree with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don’t agree that the entire plan failed, but I do agree that this part isn’t working. That’s the part I’d like to look at.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI see why you’re connecting those things. I see them differently, and I think the distinction matters here.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bridge isn’t:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are correct.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have located where you are.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now perhaps we can travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Use Their Material<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The strongest bridges often use something the other person already gave you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNobody told me the schedule changed, so I wasted half my day.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You need to discuss the communication system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their sentence already contains the bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cExactly. The fact that you didn’t get the change is why I think we need one place where schedule updates live.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their concern becomes the road into the next topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This feels very different from imposing a completely unrelated direction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Ethical Line<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Bridging is also used by politicians, salespeople, interviewees, public-relations teams, and people desperately trying not to answer questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have seen this spell abused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDid your company know the product was dangerous?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSafety is incredibly important to our company, which is why we’re excited to announce\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That isn’t a bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s a smoke bomb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A useful test:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did I actually address what was asked before I redirected?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the answer is no, you may not be steering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may be escaping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Answer, Then Move<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the cleanest bridge is simply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Answer first.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDid you break it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes. I dropped it. I’ll replace it. I also want to show you why I was moving it in the first place, because we’ve got another problem over here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing evasive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The original question received its answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now the conversation can travel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

When the Original Topic Is a Trap<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes you should not answer the question as framed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo when did you stop being selfish?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no clean answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes\u201d accepts the premise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo\u201d also accepts it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, bridge from the concern beneath the loaded question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt sounds like you think I’ve been making decisions without considering you. If that’s what you mean, let’s talk about that directly.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You did not accept the trap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You also did not run away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You built another road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Hinge Can Be Tiny<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Some bridges are only a few words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat connects to\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe reason I mention that is\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhich brings us back to\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat’s actually part of\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI agree with that piece, and\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBefore we leave that, there’s one thing\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tiny hinges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Large doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Know Where You’re Going<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is an amusing failure mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You successfully redirect the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then realize you have no idea why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before steering, ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where am I trying to go?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A decision?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A boundary?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A different topic?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A practical next step?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A deeper question?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An ending?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Direction without destination becomes conversational wandering with extra confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Sometimes Don’t Steer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Not every conversation needs a destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friends ramble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Children tell impossible stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People grieving repeat themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two people sitting around a fire may spend three hours traveling from politics to frogs to childhood cereal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wonderful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Direction is a tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not an obligation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mage does not seize the wheel simply because a wheel exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Mage’s Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Listen for moments when you want to change the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before doing it, ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What did the other person just give me that genuinely connects to where I want to go?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Find the hinge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Touch their point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Build one sentence across.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAnyway\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat actually connects to something I’ve been trying to talk about.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes conversation is a river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it is a road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And sometimes two people are standing on opposite sides of a small gap, each wondering why the other won’t simply jump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mage learns another option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
