School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Repair<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the problem isn’t what you’re talking about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The problem is how you’re talking about it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This creates a peculiar situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can continue discussing the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or you can briefly step outside the conversation and look at the conversation itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That second move is called meta-communication<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An unnecessarily complicated name for a very useful spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Balcony<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Imagine two people arguing in a room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now imagine that, for a moment, you both climb onto a balcony overlooking that room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The argument is still down there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing has been solved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But from the balcony you can see things that were difficult to notice while standing inside it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe’re interrupting each other.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think we’re answering different questions.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEvery time I explain myself, you hear it as disagreement.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe’re both getting louder.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think we’re trying to solve this too quickly.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are no longer discussing only the topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are discussing the process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Naming What Is Happening<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the simplest forms is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think something is going wrong in this conversation.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notice the word:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

something.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re being impossible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou refuse to listen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou always do this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something is happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That gives both people room to investigate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Difference Between Content and Process<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Suppose the topic is money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The content might be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe’re spending too much.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the process might be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every time one person mentions a purchase, the other feels accused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then they defend the purchase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the first person interprets the defense as refusing to discuss finances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now the conversation about money has become a conversation about character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meta-communication might sound like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI notice every time I mention spending, we immediately start defending individual purchases. I don’t actually want to decide whether each purchase was justified. I’m trying to look at the total.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Suddenly the hidden structure becomes visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Name Patterns Without Turning Them Into Weapons<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This requires care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a dangerous version:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHere we go again. You always shut down.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Technically, this is talking about the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is also throwing a chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’ve noticed that when this topic comes up, we tend to stop talking pretty quickly. Do you notice that too?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now you’re offering an observation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other person can disagree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps they see something different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now you have two maps to compare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Ask About the Conversation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes you don’t need to diagnose anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow is this conversation feeling to you?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strange question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Useful question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Continue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHonestly? I feel like you’re interrogating me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You did not know that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now you do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat am I doing that’s giving it that feeling?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Information appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Say What You Need From the Conversation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Meta-communication also lets you clarify the kind of exchange you’re trying to have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’m not asking you to fix this. I mostly need you to hear me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI actually do want advice.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’m trying to make a decision, not just vent.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don’t need us to agree. I need us to understand what each person is deciding.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These sentences can save enormous amounts of unnecessary work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two people frequently enter the same conversation trying to perform different quests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One is seeking comfort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other begins crafting solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One wants a decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other thinks they are brainstorming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One wants acknowledgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other thinks they are being asked to determine who was right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No wonder everyone is confused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Check the Rules<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Every conversation has rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most are invisible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can we interrupt?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can we joke?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are we trying to solve this tonight?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can either person leave?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is disagreement acceptable?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are emotions welcome?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does saying \u201cI don’t know\u201d count as an answer?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Different people arrive with different rulebooks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes conflict comes from the rules rather than the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meta-communication lets you negotiate them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCan we take turns for a minute? I keep losing my thought when we overlap.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s not controlling the other person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s proposing a temporary rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They can agree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Counteroffer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Decline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conversation remains cooperative magic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

When the Spell Becomes Annoying<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is such a thing as too much meta-communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Imagine trying to have lunch with someone who stops every three minutes to discuss the conversational dynamics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow did that joke affect our rapport?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please eat your sandwich.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The spell is useful when the process is interfering with the content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not every conversational twitch requires analysis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes people stumble over a sentence and recover naturally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Don’t Use the Balcony to Escape the Room<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Meta-communication can also become sophisticated avoidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDid you lie to me?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And you respond:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’m noticing that this conversation feels very accusatory.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps it does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You still have a question downstairs waiting for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Talking about the process should not become a way of never returning to the content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYes, I lied. And after we deal with that, I want to talk about how we’re having this conversation.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Order matters too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Shared Enemy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the most useful things meta-communication can do is move the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Me versus you<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

it can become:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Us versus this pattern.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe keep interrupting each other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe’re both trying to prove our memories are correct.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe keep moving into old arguments.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe’re getting too tired to do this well.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now the pattern is sitting on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both people can look at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That doesn’t guarantee agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But at least you are no longer required to make the other person the monster in order to explain why the conversation is failing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Mage’s Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When a conversation begins going strangely, imagine the balcony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For five seconds, step outside the subject.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are we doing right now?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Are we listening?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Defending?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Competing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Solving?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Punishing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Performing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Repeating?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Avoiding?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trying to be understood?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trying to win?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, if useful, say what you notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not as a verdict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an invitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think we’re starting to argue about how we’re arguing.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes that sentence gets a laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laughter can open a window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then climb back down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal was never to live on the balcony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The goal was to see the room clearly enough that when you return to the conversation\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

you know where you are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
