{"id":667,"date":"2026-08-17T18:21:24","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T18:21:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=667"},"modified":"2026-08-18T22:11:48","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T22:11:48","slug":"keep-the-map-honest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=667","title":{"rendered":"Keep the Map Honest"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Repair<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two people can witness the same conversation and later describe two entirely different events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is inconvenient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Especially when both are certain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou yelled at me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI did not yell.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes, you did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI raised my voice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat&#8217;s yelling.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo, yelling is much louder.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have abandoned the original disagreement and begun developing an international standard for yelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes repair requires correcting the record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there is a skill to doing this without turning the conversation into a courtroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Map Is Not the Territory<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Memory is not a recording.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Neither is interpretation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When we describe what happened, we create a map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imperfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One person remembers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou ignored me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The other remembers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI was trying to finish cooking.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both may contain something true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps one person asked three questions and received distracted answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the other was managing boiling water and a hot pan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mistake is assuming only one map can contain useful information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Correct the Fact, Not the Person<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou left without saying anything.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But you did say something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI did tell you I was leaving, but you were on the phone. You may not have heard me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compare:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat&#8217;s a lie. I absolutely told you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Same correction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first adds information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second adds an opponent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Precision Lowers the Temperature<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Broad statements are difficult to repair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou abandoned me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That contains an interpretation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try locating the event underneath it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cAre you talking about when I left the party around ten?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now there is something concrete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe the disagreement becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI thought we agreed to leave together.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI thought you said you were staying.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now we have a repairable problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two people operated from different maps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don&#8217;t Rewrite Their Experience<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Correcting the record does not mean correcting someone else&#8217;s internal state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If they say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI felt humiliated.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You cannot accurately respond:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cNo you didn&#8217;t.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may disagree about why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may think humiliation was never intended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may believe their interpretation was unreasonable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But their experience belongs to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI believe you felt humiliated. I disagree that I was trying to humiliate you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two different pieces of information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep them separate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don&#8217;t Let Experience Rewrite Events Either<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The reverse also matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strong feelings can make interpretations feel like facts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI felt ignored, therefore you ignored me deliberately.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The feeling may be unquestionable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conclusion is still a conclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A useful response might be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI believe you felt ignored. I wasn&#8217;t deliberately ignoring you. I was overwhelmed and stopped responding to everyone.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Again:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two truths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Same room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No required duel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Seduction of the Perfect Record<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes people become obsessed with establishing exactly what happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Who spoke first?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What exact word was used?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Was it 8:15 or 8:25?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Did you say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don&#8217;t care.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don&#8217;t care right now.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Important distinction perhaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But eventually ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Will resolving this detail change what we need to do next?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then resolve it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then you may be polishing the map while the village burns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When Accuracy Really Matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are situations where the record should be corrected clearly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Work agreements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Safety.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Promises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Accusations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Legal matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anything where an inaccurate account could meaningfully affect someone&#8217;s reputation, rights, responsibilities, or future decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In those situations, politeness does not require accepting a false version of events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI need to correct that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then correct it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Calmly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Specifically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without decorating the correction with attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Shared Record<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A surprisingly useful technique is constructing the account together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cOkay. Here&#8217;s what I think happened. Tell me where your version differs.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI arrived at seven.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe talked for about twenty minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCloser to ten.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFine. Around ten or twenty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen I brought up the money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou got quiet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was angry.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI read it as you shutting down.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was trying not to yell.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look at that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The maps are being placed beside each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not identical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Admit Uncertainty<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One of the strongest phrases in conversational repair is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI don&#8217;t remember.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat didn&#8217;t happen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou&#8217;re making that up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you genuinely don&#8217;t know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI don&#8217;t remember it that way, but I&#8217;m not certain.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This can feel dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Certainty feels powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But false certainty creates brittle conversations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mage does not need to pretend to possess information they don&#8217;t have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beware the Historian&#8217;s Weapon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is an ugly version of record-keeping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone remembers every mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Quotes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not to understand patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To win future wars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every disagreement opens the archive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cOn March fourth you said\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Records can illuminate patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They can also become ammunition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Am I remembering this so we can understand something, or so I can prosecute later?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Very different magic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Repair the Map When You&#8217;re Wrong<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the inaccurate historian is you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou never told me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They show the message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">3:14 p.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You read it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now comes a beautiful opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re right. You did tell me. I forgot.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not immediately begin explaining why the message was insufficient unless that genuinely matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Correct your map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mage&#8217;s Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When two accounts conflict, resist the urge to immediately decide:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Who is lying?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes someone is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Often, however, two imperfect observers are describing the same complicated event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Separate:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What was said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What was done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What was felt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What was inferred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What was intended.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What is uncertain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then compare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is not always to produce one flawless official history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal is to create a map accurate enough that everyone can stop arguing about where they have been\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and decide where to go next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Keep the map honest.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Honest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Repair Two people can witness the same conversation and later describe two entirely different events.
