{"id":665,"date":"2026-08-17T18:20:34","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T18:20:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=665"},"modified":"2026-08-18T22:12:30","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T22:12:30","slug":"ask-before-you-draw","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=665","title":{"rendered":"Ask Before You Draw"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Repair<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat&#8217;s not what I meant.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And somewhere inside you, a tiny lawyer wakes up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Oh yes it was.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You heard them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The words were clear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Case closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Except perhaps it isn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because conversations have a peculiar problem:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>We respond not only to what people say, but to what we think their words mean.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And those are not always the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Invisible Second Sentence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re going out again?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Five words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But you may hear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou are irresponsible and spend too much time away from your family.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So you answer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI barely go anywhere! I&#8217;ve been home all week.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They stare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was asking because I need groceries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every sentence has the words that were spoken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then there is the invisible sentence we construct behind them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes we&#8217;re excellent at this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tone exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Context exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patterns exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People imply things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But sometimes we confidently manufacture an invisible sentence the other person never wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then defend ourselves against it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Check the Target<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before defending yourself, ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What exactly am I responding to?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their words?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their tone?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A pattern?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something this reminds me of?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An assumption about what they must mean?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This doesn&#8217;t mean distrusting your perception.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It means identifying which part is perception and which part is interpretation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That distinction is powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Clarifying Spell<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A useful form is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhen you say ___, do you mean ___?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhen you say I seem different lately, do you mean you&#8217;re worried about me or that you&#8217;re upset with me?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the hidden interpretation becomes visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They can correct it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWorried.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cActually, yes. I&#8217;m upset.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now at least you&#8217;re fighting the monster that&#8217;s actually in the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Repeat Before Responding<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For more complicated conversations, try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cLet me make sure I understand you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then summarize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re not saying I shouldn&#8217;t take the job. You&#8217;re saying you&#8217;re worried we&#8217;re making the decision without considering what the move would do to the kids. Is that right?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If they say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Proceed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If they say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You just avoided arguing against a position they didn&#8217;t hold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Clarification Is Not Interrogation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is an aggressive version of this technique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat exactly do you mean by that?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tone:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sword drawn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The words themselves are fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The delivery changes the spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compare:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat exactly do you mean by that?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m not sure how you&#8217;re using that word. What do you mean by it?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Same request.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Curiosity keeps clarification from becoming cross-examination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sometimes You Understood Perfectly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clarification is not an obligation to pretend obvious behavior is mysterious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re useless.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not need to ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat do you mean by useless?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps they meant the ancient agricultural definition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Probably not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Likewise, clarification should not become a ritual used to avoid responding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDid you take my money?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat do you mean by <em>take<\/em>?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mage uses clarification when meaning is genuinely uncertain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not when certainty is merely inconvenient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Ghosts in the Room<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes your interpretation comes from somewhere real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just not from this conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone sighs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your body tightens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because another person used to sigh before becoming angry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need to talk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your stomach drops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">History has taught you what those words predict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That history matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it may not be prophecy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the person standing in front of you is sharing the room with several ghosts they cannot see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clarification lets you check whether you&#8217;re speaking to them\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">or to someone who isn&#8217;t here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ask Before Defending<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou seem very comfortable spending money lately.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You feel accused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of immediately producing bank statements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat sounded like criticism to me. Was that how you meant it?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes. I&#8217;m worried.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now discuss it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo. I was actually wondering whether work has been going better.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Entire defensive speech avoided.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mana conserved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Offer Clarification Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When someone misunderstands you, resist:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat&#8217;s obviously not what I meant.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If it were obvious, you probably wouldn&#8217;t be having this problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI can see how you got there. What I meant was\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cNo, that&#8217;s not quite it. Let me explain the distinction.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You&#8217;re repairing the map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not punishing them for having read it incorrectly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Danger of Mind Reading<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humans do this constantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re trying to embarrass me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou don&#8217;t care.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou think you&#8217;re better than me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re just saying that because you&#8217;re jealous.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes those interpretations are exactly right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But notice what has happened:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have claimed access to another person&#8217;s internal state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Very advanced magic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Usually performed with no training whatsoever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A safer form is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m starting to feel like I&#8217;m being embarrassed here. Is that what you&#8217;re trying to do?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now your experience remains yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Their intention remains something they can answer for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mage&#8217;s Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For one day, notice whenever you mentally add a second sentence to someone&#8217;s words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re wearing that?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your mind adds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>You look ridiculous.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe that&#8217;s exactly what they mean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cAre you saying you don&#8217;t like it?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now reality gets a chance to participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is the heart of this spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not endless uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not pretending people never imply things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simply allowing reality one opportunity to correct the story forming in your head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before you raise the shield\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">before you draw the sword\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>check what you&#8217;re actually fighting.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Repair Someone says: \u201cThat&#8217;s not what I meant.\u201d And somewhere inside you, a tiny lawyer wakes up.
