That made it difficult for you to finish your point. I&#8217;m sorry. Next time I&#8217;m going to let you finish before I respond.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No self-destruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No begging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No courtroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No demand for immediate forgiveness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just ownership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Explanation Is Not the Enemy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Context matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suppose you snapped at someone after working fourteen hours and sleeping badly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That information may genuinely help them understand what happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The problem comes when explanation quietly transforms into acquittal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI snapped because I was exhausted.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Useful information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cSo you shouldn&#8217;t be upset that I snapped.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Different spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your exhaustion may explain your behavior without making the behavior harmless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Both can be true:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I was exhausted.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I treated you poorly.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conversation becomes much easier when every truth does not have to murder the truth standing beside it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Separate the Rooms<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes an apology needs two conversations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Room one:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What did I do?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Room two:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What was happening for me?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t rush into room two because room one is uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI shouldn&#8217;t have raised my voice at you. I can see why that felt like I wasn&#8217;t interested.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now your behavior is visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This makes repair possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Specificity is powerful magic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Missing Ingredient: Change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the same apology appears every Thursday, eventually it becomes part of the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;m sorry I yelled.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;m sorry I yelled.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;m sorry I yelled.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At some point the important question becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What changes before next Thursday?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leave the room earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice the first signs of escalation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stop drinking during arguments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schedule difficult conversations differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask for help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learn another skill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An apology acknowledges the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Repair also changes the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When You Don&#8217;t Know How to Fix It<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes you genuinely don&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Say that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI know I hurt you. I&#8217;m not sure what would help repair this. Is there something you need from me?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can figure it out together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But notice the difference between:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cTell me what to do so you&#8217;ll stop being upset.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI want to understand what repair would look like for you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Same general question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Very different magic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Armor<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why are clean apologies difficult?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because apology makes us temporarily vulnerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We admit:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I was wrong about something.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I caused harm.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I failed to behave according to my own standards.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ego hears danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Quick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Armor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Counterattack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Technicality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Minimization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anything to prevent the frightening possibility that someone might see us standing there without a defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But perhaps they already saw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps that&#8217;s why you&#8217;re apologizing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mage&#8217;s Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next time you owe someone an apology, try removing everything that exists primarily to protect your image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not your dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your image.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remove:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>but.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remove:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>if.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remove:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>you made me.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remove the argument explaining why you&#8217;re still basically the good person in the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then look at what remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI said something cruel because I was angry.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cIt wasn&#8217;t fair.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m sorry.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;m going to handle that differently next time.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can discuss everything else afterward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a moment, leave the armor outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may discover something surprising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taking responsibility does not make you smaller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it is the first moment in the entire argument when you finally stop defending the character\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and simply become responsible for the person wearing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Repair There is an apology that contains a hidden duel.
