{"id":661,"date":"2026-08-17T18:16:01","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T18:16:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=661"},"modified":"2026-08-18T22:12:30","modified_gmt":"2026-08-18T22:12:30","slug":"take-the-coin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=661","title":{"rendered":"Take the Coin"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Repair<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Criticism is annoying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even worse:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the other person is right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not completely right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That would almost be easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are <strong>twelve percent right.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And unfortunately, the twelve percent is sitting directly in the middle of the thing you would most like to defend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou never listen. You just wait until it&#8217;s your turn to talk.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Immediately your mind produces evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Never?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What about yesterday?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What about the conversation last week?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What about the three-hour phone call where you barely spoke?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have successfully proven that <strong>never<\/strong> is inaccurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There remains one small problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You interrupted them six times in the last ten minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Coin on the Table<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine every criticism as someone dumping a bag onto a table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside might be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Exaggeration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Anger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Assumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Old resentment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bad interpretation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Projection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And somewhere among all of that\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">a coin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not have to purchase the entire bag to pick up the coin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is the spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Take the true part.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Partial Agreement Is Still Agreement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou completely ignored me all night.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You spoke several times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But perhaps you were distracted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat&#8217;s ridiculous. I talked to you at dinner.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI don&#8217;t think I completely ignored you, but you&#8217;re right that I was distracted and didn&#8217;t give you much attention.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have not surrendered reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have made it more accurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why This Is Difficult<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Arguments create a strange pressure toward total positions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the other person is wrong about something, we want them to be wrong about everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If we admit one point, we fear the rest will come marching through the gate behind it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So we defend territory that isn&#8217;t worth defending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou were late.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOnly seven minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou didn&#8217;t tell me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy phone was almost dead.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still didn&#8217;t tell them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou knew I was waiting.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI thought you&#8217;d assume traffic.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there is a perfectly usable coin sitting on the table:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re right. I should have messaged you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Agreement Is Not Submission<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This technique becomes especially useful when the rest of the criticism is unfair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou were late because you don&#8217;t respect my time.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are at least two claims here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You were late.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The reason was disrespect.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the first is true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The second may not be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re right that I was late, and I should have let you know. I don&#8217;t agree that it was because I don&#8217;t respect you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You accepted what belonged to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You left the rest on the table.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Don&#8217;t Pay With Counterfeit Coins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a fake version of this technique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cFine, I guess I was technically late.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cSure, if that&#8217;s what you need to hear.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cOkay, maybe I made one tiny mistake.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are not acknowledgments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are disagreement wearing a paper hat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If something is true, let it be true without poisoning it on the way out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYes. I did that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A surprisingly strong sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Strange Power of Being Corrected<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is another reason to practice this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People become less afraid to tell you things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If every correction triggers a trial, people eventually stop bringing information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your friend notices you&#8217;re becoming rude.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your partner notices you&#8217;re withdrawing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your coworker notices an error.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your student notices you contradicted yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your child notices you broke one of your own rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If correcting you costs forty-five minutes of argument, people learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This can create the illusion that you&#8217;re rarely wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congratulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have destroyed your warning system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Take the Coin Quickly<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou interrupted me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You realize:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYou&#8217;re right. Finish what you were saying.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Four seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conversation continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compare:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI wasn&#8217;t interrupting. I thought you were done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI obviously wasn&#8217;t.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou paused.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was breathing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHow was I supposed to know?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou always do this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI absolutely do not always do this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And now twenty minutes have passed because nobody wanted to spend four seconds being wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Expensive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sometimes There Is No Coin<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This matters too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not every criticism contains truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone may misunderstand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Manipulate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or simply be wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are not required to invent fault in yourself to demonstrate maturity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If there is no coin:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t take one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can still respond without escalation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI understand that&#8217;s how you&#8217;re seeing it. I don&#8217;t agree with that description.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The practice is not compulsive self-blame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The practice is accuracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sometimes the Coin Is Bigger Than You Wanted<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You begin looking for the tiny true part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then realize:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Oh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most of this is true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unpleasant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is another reason the technique requires courage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t know how large the coin will be until you pick it up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI can see why you thought I was avoiding you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cActually, I was avoiding you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now you have something real to work with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Do Not Weaponize the Spell<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once you learn this technique, there is a temptation to use it on other people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cSurely you can admit you&#8217;re at least partly wrong.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Careful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spell is primarily for examining <strong>your own<\/strong> position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Demanding that another person find something to concede can become another method of forcing agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You take your coins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They decide what belongs to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mage&#8217;s Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The next time someone criticizes you, resist the immediate question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How are they wrong?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try another:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Is there anything here that is true?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe five percent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe eighty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe none.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Find out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take what belongs to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leave what doesn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then continue the conversation without carrying a sack of accusations you never agreed to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do not become weaker every time you admit something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes you become considerably harder to knock over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because there is very little leverage in telling a person something they already have the strength to say themselves:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat part is mine.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Repair Criticism is annoying.
