School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Repair<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You meant one thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They heard another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Welcome to conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

There is a particularly stubborn argument humans have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut that wasn’t my intention.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes this is completely true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You weren’t trying to insult them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You weren’t trying to dismiss them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You weren’t trying to embarrass them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You weren’t trying to frighten them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yet\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

they were insulted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dismissed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Embarrassed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now two people are standing in front of the same event holding apparently incompatible truths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI didn’t mean to hurt you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou hurt me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are not necessarily contradicting each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Arrow<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Imagine practicing archery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You aim at the center of the target.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The arrow lands three feet to the left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You would not walk over to the target and announce:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cActually, that’s a bullseye because that’s where I intended it to go.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Intent tells us something important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It tells us what you were attempting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Impact tells us something different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It tells us where the arrow landed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A skilled archer needs both pieces of information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So does a skilled conversationalist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Intent Matters<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is a temptation to solve this problem by declaring:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Impact matters. Intent doesn’t.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Too simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Intent matters enormously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is a meaningful difference between:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

accidentally stepping on someone’s foot,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and deliberately stomping on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Same foot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Possibly similar pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Very different event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Intent helps us understand character, trust, responsibility, and what should happen next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If someone accidentally says something hurtful, that matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If they deliberately choose the words because they know those words will hurt, that matters too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mage does not throw away useful information merely because another piece of information is also important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Impact Matters Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The opposite mistake is equally common.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI didn’t mean it that way, so you shouldn’t be upset.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now intention has become a spell of immunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But your internal intention does not completely determine another person’s experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can accidentally embarrass someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accidentally frighten them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accidentally expose something private.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accidentally insult something important to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The absence of malicious intent may change what repair is appropriate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It does not travel backward through time and prevent the impact from occurring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Two Truths in the Same Room<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Try holding both:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI believe you didn’t mean to hurt me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt still hurt.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI wasn’t trying to dismiss you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI can see why what I said felt dismissive.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is difficult because people often hear acknowledgment as confession.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If I acknowledge your experience, perhaps I am admitting your entire interpretation is correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not necessarily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can acknowledge impact without agreeing with every conclusion attached to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Missing Step<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Imagine:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI didn’t mean to embarrass you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conversation over?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But often something remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A stronger repair might be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI didn’t mean to embarrass you. I can see that I did. I’m sorry. Next time I’ll ask before bringing that up around other people.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now we have:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Intent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Repair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adjustment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The event has produced information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something can change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

When Impact Becomes a Weapon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is another side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone can say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou hurt me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And from that conclude:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTherefore you did something wrong.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not always.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boundaries can hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Disagreement can hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being told no can hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hearing an uncomfortable truth can hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone’s emotional response is real information about their experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is not automatically a verdict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI felt rejected when you wouldn’t lend me the money.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That feeling may be completely genuine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It does not automatically create an obligation to lend the money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI felt disrespected when you disagreed with me in front of everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Real experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But perhaps the disagreement was respectful and necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Impact deserves examination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not automatic obedience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

When Intent Becomes a Shield<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, good intentions cannot be endlessly invoked to excuse predictable harm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first time:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI didn’t know.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tenth time:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something has changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once you’ve been given information about how your behavior affects someone, continuing exactly the same behavior while repeatedly announcing good intentions becomes less convincing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At some point:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI didn’t mean to\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

needs to become:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat should I do differently?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Ask About the Landing<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes you don’t know what happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their expression changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They became quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something shifted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of guessing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDid that come across harsher than I meant it?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI noticed you got quiet after I said that. Did something land wrong?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notice the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are investigating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not declaring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re obviously offended.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re overreacting.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI guess I’m just a terrible person then.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What happened?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Useful question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Don’t Invent Intent<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The reverse is equally important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Humans are astonishingly confident about knowing why other humans do things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou said that because you wanted to embarrass me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re trying to control me.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou wanted me to feel guilty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But now an interpretation has been presented as an observation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A more accurate version might be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen you said that in front of everyone, I felt embarrassed. Were you trying to make a point about me?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now the other person can answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You may not believe the answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s allowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But at least the question exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Mage’s Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

When a conversation goes wrong, separate two questions:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What was I trying to do?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What actually happened?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not use the first to erase the second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not use the second to automatically rewrite the first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hold both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then ask the question that matters most for repair:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What do we do with this information now?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mage is not judged solely by where the arrow was aimed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nor solely by where it landed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The practice is learning from both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Observe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adjust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because good intentions are valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But if your arrows keep landing in the neighbor’s garden, eventually the lesson is not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey should understand where I was aiming.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lesson is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Adjust your shot.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
