School of Conversation \u2014 Element of Repair<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is a peculiar rule people sometimes invent during conversation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once words leave your mouth, you must defend them forever.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You say something badly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other person reacts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And instead of thinking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That wasn’t quite what I meant.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

you suddenly become the attorney representing a sentence you didn’t even like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWell, technically what I said was\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wonderful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now everyone is in court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

There is another option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try again.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Spell<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The basic form is almost embarrassingly simple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI don’t like how I said that. Let me try again.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then say it again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Different words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Better words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Words that more accurately represent what you were actually trying to communicate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s the entire spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Words Are Approximations<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Thought is complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Language is compression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have an entire internal experience involving memories, emotions, context, assumptions, bodily sensations, intentions, and half-formed ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then somebody asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat do you think?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And you’re expected to turn all of that into a sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the sentence is excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the sentence comes out wearing one shoe and carrying a knife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That doesn’t necessarily mean the thought itself was terrible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It may simply mean the translation failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Defensive Trap<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Imagine saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou never listen to me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other person responds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNever? I listened to you for an hour yesterday.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now you have choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You could defend never<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat doesn’t count.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou weren’t really listening.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou know what I mean.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And suddenly the conversation becomes an investigation into every conversation you’ve had for the last six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re right. Never isn’t accurate. Let me try that again.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’ve been feeling like when I bring up this particular problem, we move away from it before I feel heard.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Much better spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Same underlying concern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Less collateral damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Accuracy Is Not Weakness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Some people resist correcting themselves because they believe it gives the other person a victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They caught you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You used the wrong word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You overstated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You were unfair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now admitting that feels like losing ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But conversation is not always a battlefield.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes accuracy is more valuable than territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat’s not fair. I don’t always do that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and they’re right, you can simply say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re right.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then continue:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat I’m actually trying to talk about is what happened tonight.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You gave up a bad position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bad positions are expensive to defend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Don’t Repair Into Another Attack<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is a counterfeit version of this spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFine. Let me try again in words you’ll understand.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is not repair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is an insult wearing repair’s hat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cApparently I need to phrase this very carefully around you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also not repair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat I meant, if you’d actually listened\u2014\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The spell has failed before the sentence even arrives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A genuine retry contains some willingness to consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe my transmission contributed to the misunderstanding.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not necessarily all of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enough to try another transmission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the Meaning Needs Repair Too<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is a more difficult version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You say something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hear yourself say it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And realize:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not merely:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I phrased that badly.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don’t actually agree with what I just said.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Especially when angry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or frightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or embarrassed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes we reach for the nearest available weapon and discover only afterward that we don’t believe in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are allowed to say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo. I’m taking that back.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not pretending it wasn’t said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not demanding that the other person forget it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Taking responsibility for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat was unfair. I said it because I was angry, and I don’t actually think that’s true.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is powerful magic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Other Person May Still Be Hurt<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Trying again does not erase the first attempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou’re exactly like your father.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

and then immediately realize you’ve thrown a grenade into the room, saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLet me try that again\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

does not magically rebuild the furniture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other person may still need to address what you said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s fair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The retry means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don’t want the bad sentence to continue representing my position.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It does not mean:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are forbidden from having been affected by it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes repair and accountability happen together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Offer the Spell to Others<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This technique becomes especially useful when you allow other people to use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone says something clumsy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before constructing the most hostile possible interpretation, you can ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cDo you want to try that again?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tone matters enormously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Said with contempt:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Said with curiosity:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A doorway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI’m not sure that came out the way you intended.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are giving them an opportunity to repair their own transmission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes they will.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes they’ll say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo. That’s exactly what I meant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Useful information either way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Five-Second Rewind<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

You don’t need to wait for disaster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Practice catching yourself quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat’s not the word I want.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWait, I’m exaggerating.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, that’s unfair.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLet me phrase that differently.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cActually, I need to correct myself.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These tiny revisions keep conversations flexible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also communicate something important:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I care more about representing my meaning accurately than protecting every sentence my mouth happens to produce.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Mage Is Not the Spell<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This is perhaps the deeper lesson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are not required to become identical with something merely because you said it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sentence came from you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That makes you responsible for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It does not make you permanently bound to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Evaluate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same principle applies far beyond conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Humans revise maps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beliefs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Techniques.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Interpretations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why should speech be the one place where revision becomes shameful?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Mage’s Practice<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For one day, notice every time you say something that is almost<\/em> what you meant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not catastrophically wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just inaccurate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Too broad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Too sharp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Too certain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Too vague.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of letting it pass because correcting yourself feels awkward, try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cActually, let me say that better.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No self-punishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No courtroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just revision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Conversation is happening live.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is no final draft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes wisdom looks remarkably unimpressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it is simply a person halfway through a sentence realizing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nope.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And beginning again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
