The Player’s Handbook<\/em> for Dungeons & Dragons 3.5 contains dozens of spells intended for adventures, monsters, and heroes. But many of them also describe forces we encounter every day\u2014not through literal magic, but through psychology, emotion, body language, reputation, persuasion, fear, inspiration, and trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This series isn’t about claiming magic is literally happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, we’ll borrow the language of the game to give ourselves a vocabulary for recognizing social forces at work. Just as a martial artist studies leverage and balance, we can study the “spells” people seem to cast on one another through words and presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
