carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heroes entered burning buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heroes fought when everyone else ran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heroes stood between monsters and children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heroes did not abandon friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Heroes never surrendered innocent people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, most importantly, heroes always found another way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That last rule was Talen&#8217;s favorite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It was also the one that caused the most trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Talen owned thirty-seven volumes of <em>The Adventures of Sir Veyr<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He had read all of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Several twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Volume Twelve eleven times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was the one where Veyr was trapped beneath Mount Calon with the demon king, his wounded companion, and three hundred prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The demon demanded one prisoner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veyr refused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The demon threatened everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veyr refused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mountain began collapsing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veyr still refused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, through a combination of courage, cleverness, and a previously established weakness involving silver bells, Veyr saved everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Talen loved that story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat&#8217;s what makes him a hero,\u201d he once told his sister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe refuses the choice.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His sister, Mara, looked up from her sewing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
