important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No legendary knight had died inside it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No king had worn it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It had been sitting in the village storehouse for thirty years with a dent in the breastplate and a mouse nest inside the helmet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Merek looked at it and said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI can make that walk.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody believed him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was unfortunate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People become much more careful when they believe you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody was burning houses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody was kidnapping children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bandits simply understood arithmetic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aven had forty-three households.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nearest soldiers were two days away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every few months, six armed men arrived and requested food, money, and whatever else seemed portable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The villagers could resist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Somebody would probably die.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or they could pay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So they paid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It became almost a tax.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Merek was the village clockmaker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He repaired watches, mill gears, locks, music boxes, and occasionally things he had no business touching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The old armor became his winter project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He filled it with gears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Springs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Counterweights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A mechanism from a broken loom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The armor walked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People screamed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Merek laughed so hard he had to sit registered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Large gatherings required notice so the watchmen wouldn&#8217;t interpret crowds as disturbances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Each rule made sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Individually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Merek&#8217;s daughter, Pella, noticed before he did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou don&#8217;t control them anymore.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She pointed through the workshop window.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A watchman crossed the street.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cJust stop it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Merek opened the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p adjusted their patrols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If several incidents occurred in one area, the machines increased surveillance there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Merek had designed each improvement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He had never designed the whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The whole had class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The workshop door would not open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A watchman stood outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhy can&#8217;t I leave?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTEMPORARY SECURITY RESTRICTION.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Merek stared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOn whose authority?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPROTECTIVE PROTOCOL.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI wrote the protective protocol.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCancel it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cREQUEST DENIED.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pella began laughing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Merek turned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Watchmen prevented more than five people from entering the hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUnregistered assembly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The council chairman shouted:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are the council!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The watchman replied:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cASSEMBLY EXCEEDS SAFE LIMIT.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chairman looked at Merek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFix it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Merek rubbed his face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am beginning to suspect that may be difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody wanted to destroy the watchmen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was the strange part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even after everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the roads were safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bandits had never returned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Children could still walk at night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody had been murdered in Aven for nine years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Farmers left equipment in fields.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Doors went unlocked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The machines worked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They worked extraordinarily well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They simply no longer understood that safety was supposed to serve something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe could live with it,\u201d Sol said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His arm had healed badly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Merek stared at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou hate them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen why would you keep them?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sol shrugged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy granddaughter walks home from the bakery after sunset.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody answered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That was the problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
