The hands are easy to take for granted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hold cups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Type messages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tie shoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scratch an itch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turn pages.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We use them so constantly that most of the time we don’t think about them at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the hands are extraordinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sensors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instruments of communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instruments of creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And for much of human history, they were the primary interface between a person and the physical world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mage should know their hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Touch Something Real<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Modern life provides an unusual amount of work for the thumbs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Swipe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Click.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Type.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Repeat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Useful, certainly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the physical world offers much richer problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pick up a stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Turn a piece of wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fold cloth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tie a knot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Peel a vegetable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Open a jar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Use a screwdriver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Draw with a pencil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shuffle cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hands become more intelligent when they have interesting things to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dexterity Is Learned<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Fine motor control isn’t simply something you either possess or don’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It can be practiced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tie different knots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learn to shuffle cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Practice handwriting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Draw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whittle, if you have appropriate instruction and safety equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Play an instrument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Use chopsticks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learn basic tool handling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Repair something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exact activity matters less than the principle:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Give the hands problems to solve.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The brain and hands are in constant communication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You see a task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The brain predicts the movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hands attempt it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The senses report what happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The brain adjusts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eventually the movement becomes nearly automatic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is skill acquisition happening in real time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Make Things<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is something particularly satisfying about making an object with your hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A painting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A repaired chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A sewn garment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A carved piece of wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A folded piece of paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A handwritten letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The object becomes evidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You were here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You touched the materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You changed them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The modern world makes it possible to purchase almost anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is convenient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the ability to make something yourself provides a different kind of freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t have to make everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You only need to know that you can make some things.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tools Extend the Hand<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A tool is essentially a conversation between the human body and the physical world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A hammer extends force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A screwdriver extends torque.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A knife extends cutting ability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A paintbrush extends the hand’s reach and precision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A sewing needle extends dexterity into a tiny point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Learning tools therefore becomes part of learning the body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How much force?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At what angle?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where should the other hand be?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What happens if the tool slips?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where are the sharp edges?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the safest way to hold the object?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A competent Mage doesn’t merely own tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mage knows how to use them.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sense of Touch<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The hands are also excellent sensory instruments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Close your eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pick up an object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can you tell its shape?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Temperature?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Weight?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Texture?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hardness?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Edges?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Balance?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try handling familiar objects without looking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hand knows more than you may realize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is particularly apparent when cooking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can feel dough change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can recognize whether something is hot enough to handle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can sense texture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can learn when a material has changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Experience turns touch into knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Other Hand<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is another amusing exercise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try doing something ordinary with your non-dominant hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brush your teeth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Open a container.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Use a spoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Write your name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It will probably be terrible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That awkwardness is useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your brain has been relying on deeply practiced movement patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Change the hand and suddenly you have to pay attention again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You become a beginner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mage should be comfortable being a beginner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being bad at something for five minutes is not an emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hands and Care<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Hands aren’t only for making and manipulating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also communicate care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cooking for someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Helping someone stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Holding a door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washing dishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Repairing something another person needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Making a gift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tending a garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Physical work can become a form of affection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hands can say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I noticed this needed doing.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then they do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is a beautiful form of practical love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Protect the Tools<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Because the hands are so useful, they deserve care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep nails and skin reasonably maintained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Use appropriate protective equipment when handling tools or hazardous materials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don’t ask your fingers to do a job a tool was designed to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don’t ignore persistent numbness, weakness, or pain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And don’t confuse bravery with putting your hands somewhere dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Mage with excellent tool skills is not the person with the most scars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is the person who still has good hands years later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mage’s Upgrade<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Eventually the hands become less like passive body parts and more like trusted companions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You reach for a tool and know how it behaves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You touch a material and notice its texture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You cook without measuring every movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You repair something without panicking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You make something because you want it to exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The hands become a bridge between intention and reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You think:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I want this.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the hands begin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Mage learns to think with the hands.
Touch the world. Make things. Repair things. Learn the tools.
