class=\"wp-block-heading\">FIELD REPORT<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody remembers who lit the first one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s the strange thing about lanterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are almost always inherited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone carries one through the dark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone else sees the light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, eventually, the first person hands it over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ENCOUNTER LOG<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boy was lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He had been walking for hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The woods had looked different in the dark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every tree looked like every other tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every direction felt wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was beginning to panic when he saw the light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An old man stood on the trail holding a lantern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou lost?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The boy nodded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The old man smiled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThought so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He didn&#8217;t ask how the boy got lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He didn&#8217;t ask why he hadn&#8217;t brought a map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He simply turned around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCome on.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They walked together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After a while, the boy noticed something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The old man wasn&#8217;t walking in front of him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was walking beside him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FIELD NOTE<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A good guide doesn&#8217;t class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They point out the roots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The loose stones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The places where the trail disappears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then they let you keep your feet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ENCOUNTER WARNING<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Lantern is easily misunderstood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People sometimes think the person carrying it is supposed to lead everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That isn&#8217;t the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The job is to <strong>make the next few feet visible.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t need to illuminate the entire mountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t need to know what happens after the bend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t need to carry someone all the way home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes you just hold the light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes they take the lantern from you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes they carry it for someone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s how the light travels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator
