Tape yellowed with age. Somebody had written his name on the top in fading marker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Inside were things he hadn&#8217;t seen in years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A photograph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An old birthday card.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A little plastic toy with one wheel missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He picked up the toy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And immediately remembered the sound of little feet running across the hallway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He sat down on the floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For a while, he didn&#8217;t move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLook at you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He wasn&#8217;t talking to the toy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not really.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He put it back in the box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But this time, he didn&#8217;t close the lid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FIELD NOTE<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Keeper is sometimes accused of living in the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is unfair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Keeper knows the past is gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s precisely why it keeps little pieces of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not to live there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To remember who lived there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ENCOUNTER WARNING<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There will come a time when someone asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhy do you still have this?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may not have a good answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s okay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not everything you keep needs a practical justification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some things are worth keeping because they once belonged to a moment that mattered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A version of yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A life you survived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A life you loved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The object may be insignificant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The memory is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">ENTITY STATUS<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>THE KEEPER \u2014 STILL HERE.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Keep what matters.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Let the rest go.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>And don&#8217;t let anyone convince you that love requires a receipt.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u2014 Rogue Entity Alert Classification: Rogue EntityThreat Level: GentleKnown Habitat: Kitchen drawers, old photographs, worn tools, children&#8217;s rooms, and the objects nobody else understands why you kept.
