Nostalgia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Memory Leech is an entity that survives by attaching itself to something ordinary and waiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may choose a smell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fresh bread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rain on warm pavement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An old perfume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The particular soap someone used when you were a child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing remarkable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Until you smell it twenty years later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And suddenly\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>you&#8217;re eight years old.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can see the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You know what the curtains looked like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You remember where everyone was sitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can almost hear somebody laughing in the next room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Memory Leech + 1.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Song<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Songs are particularly dangerous specimens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You haven&#8217;t heard it in fifteen years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then it comes through a speaker in a grocery store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Three seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s all it takes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suddenly you&#8217;re standing in a different car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A different summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe someone you haven&#8217;t thought about in years is sitting beside you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The song ends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The grocery store remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But for a moment, two places occupied the same piece of your mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s the work of a Memory Leech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Strange Part<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Memory Leech doesn&#8217;t actually steal anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It does the opposite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It <strong>returns<\/strong> something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes something you wanted back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes something you had completely forgotten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A photograph can do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So can a recipe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A particular brand of pencil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The smell of a swimming pool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sound of an old fan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One tiny sensory detail can open a door you didn&#8217;t know was still there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Field Note<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Memory Leeches are unpredictable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You cannot always choose what they bring back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A smell might return your happiest summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It might return someone you miss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It might return both at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why nostalgia can feel strangely heavy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You&#8217;re not only remembering something beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You&#8217;re also remembering that it happened <strong>then.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Identification Test<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice what happens when an ordinary thing suddenly makes you stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A smell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A taste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A photograph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If your first thought is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cOh my god, I remember class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Look around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice where you are now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then let the memory finish arriving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some Memory Leeches carry painful things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some carry wonderful things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And some bring back a person you haven&#8217;t seen in years\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">just long enough for you to remember how it felt when they were here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then they disappear again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leaving you standing in the
