class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Shrine is a place that became important because someone kept treating it as important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It doesn&#8217;t need a priest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It doesn&#8217;t need an altar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it doesn&#8217;t even need to be intentional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can be a bench.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A particular tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A corner of a garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The chair where someone always sat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A little table where photographs slowly accumulated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Tree<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider an old tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It grows beside a path.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People walk past it every day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Birds use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Children climb it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rain falls through its branches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then someone starts sitting beneath it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They go there when they need to think.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tree + 1.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They bring a book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then a friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, years later, they bring someone they love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tree + 2.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually, the tree becomes the place people go when something important has happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bad news.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A goodbye.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The tree hasn&#8217;t asked for any of this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it has been there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Tree + 3.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congratulations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have a Shrine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Strange Part<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Shrines are created through repetition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not necessarily ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simply <strong>returning.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A place becomes important because people keep bringing important moments to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The physical location remains ordinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meaning accumulates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cLet&#8217;s go there.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And everyone knows exactly where they mean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Field Note<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Shrine doesn&#8217;t have to belong to everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may belong to one person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your grandmother&#8217;s kitchen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your favorite childhood hiding place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bench where you always ate lunch with someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The patch of grass where you proposed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To a stranger:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nothing special.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Absolutely not nothing.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Identification Test<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhere do you go when something matters?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer may be a Shrine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t be surprised if the place looks completely ordinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s part of the disguise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The universe doesn&#8217;t put little signs on sacred places.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humans do something stranger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They keep returning to the same piece of ground until it becomes
