tattooed onto people who have very strong opinions about wolves.<br><strong>Appearance:<\/strong> Usually symbolic.<br><strong>Danger Level:<\/strong> Low.<br><strong>Influence:<\/strong> Considerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Totem is an object that has somehow become responsible for representing something much larger than itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A flag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A family crest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A necklace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A carved animal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A photograph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A symbol painted on a wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first, it&#8217;s just a picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then someone tells you what it means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And suddenly the picture has acquired a job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Little Fox<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consider a small fox carved from wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By itself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fox.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pointy ears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Probably terrible at carving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy grandfather made that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fox + 1.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe made it after he left home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fox + 2.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe said the fox reminded him to stay clever when things were difficult.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Fox + 3.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now the little wooden animal isn&#8217;t merely decorative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has become a reminder of someone who survived something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A philosophy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A family story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A particular kind of courage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fox is still sitting on the shelf.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it is carrying considerably more than wood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Strange Power of Symbols<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Totems work because humans are exceptionally good at compressing enormous ideas into tiny objects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A ring can mean marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A flag can mean a nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A photograph can mean an entire childhood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A little animal can represent courage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A stone can represent home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The object is small.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meaning is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why Totems can be surprisingly powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They allow something enormous to become portable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Field Note<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Totems frequently begin as reminders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually they may become identities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person doesn&#8217;t merely wear the symbol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They begin saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat&#8217;s who we are.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s when the Totem has reached full maturity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has stopped representing an idea and started helping define the people who carry it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Handle mature Totems with respect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may be holding something that someone else considers part of themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Identification Test<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat does that symbol mean to you?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer may be surprisingly large.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If someone looks at a small object and begins telling you about their family, their homeland, their teacher, their struggle, or the person they want to become\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">you&#8217;ve found a Totem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The creature itself may fit comfortably in your hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The thing it represents may be much harder to carry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that is the peculiar talent of the Totem:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>making an enormous idea small enough to keep close.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
