spend time together.<br><strong>Appearance:<\/strong> Usually indistinguishable from the host.<br><strong>Danger Level:<\/strong> Variable.<br><strong>Preferred Strategy:<\/strong> \u201cI thought that was my idea.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Mimic is something you picked up from another person without noticing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A phrase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A gesture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A way of telling a story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The particular face you make when something tastes terrible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe your mother always said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWell, that&#8217;s a fine mess.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You never thought much about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then one day you say it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And someone laughs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat&#8217;s exactly what your mother says.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Mimic detected.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Strange Part<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mimics aren&#8217;t necessarily copying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s what makes them difficult to spot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t sit down and decide:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Today I shall acquire Grandpa&#8217;s mannerisms.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It happens gradually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You live around someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You hear how they speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You watch how they solve problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You absorb little pieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually one of those pieces emerges from you as though it had always belonged there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe it does now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Family Specimens<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Families are particularly rich Mimic territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A child grows up hearing a parent&#8217;s expressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A sibling develops the same laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A grandchild learns a recipe and insists on preparing it exactly the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone raises an eyebrow in precisely the way their grandfather did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody taught them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody needed to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The pattern simply traveled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Generation + 1.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Field Note<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mimics aren&#8217;t always obvious until someone who knew the original creature sees you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s when the alarm goes off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou just did the thing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat thing?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat thing Dad used to do.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is usually a brief period of denial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then, occasionally, laughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not be alarmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have not been replaced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You have simply discovered that humans are porous creatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We leave traces on each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Identification Test<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you catch yourself doing something strangely specific, ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhere did I learn that?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes you&#8217;ll find a teacher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes a friend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes a parent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes someone you haven&#8217;t thought about in years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And sometimes you won&#8217;t find an answer at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not everything needs an origin story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Somewhere along the way, the thing became yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is the interesting part about a Mimic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It begins as something borrowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then you use it for twenty years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually nobody remembers who owned it first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not even you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At that point, the Mimic has completed its transformation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>It
