is an ordinary object that has somehow acquired a reputation for being on your side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A coin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A pair of socks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A battered baseball cap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A little stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A necklace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something that was present when something good happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first encounter is usually innocent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You flip a coin before an important decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It lands the way you wanted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coin + 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later, you carry it into an interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You get the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coin + 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You take it to dinner afterward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Excellent meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coin + 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At this point, the coin has begun developing a r\u00e9sum\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Soon you&#8217;re looking for it before anything important happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhere&#8217;s my coin?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because obviously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The coin has a reputation now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>And reputations are powerful things.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe the coin isn&#8217;t actually causing anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe you simply feel more confident when you have it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe that confidence changes how you walk into the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe the ritual reminds you that you&#8217;ve succeeded before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe the universe has no idea what you&#8217;re talking about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The coin doesn&#8217;t seem concerned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It continues being a coin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Interesting Part<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lucky Charms don&#8217;t necessarily work because they are magical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They work because <strong>humans are ritual-making creatures.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We notice what happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We associate the object with the outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then we carry the association forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The object becomes a tiny portable piece of confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A reminder:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;ve done this before.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And sometimes that&#8217;s enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Field Note<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lucky Charms become especially powerful when someone says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cI&#8217;ve had this since I was a kid.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At that point, you&#8217;re no longer dealing with a coin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You&#8217;re dealing with twelve years of accumulated evidence, selective memory, tradition, and emotional investment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-heading\">Identification Test<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cWhat happens if you don&#8217;t have it?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the subject immediately looks alarmed\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">you have found one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether the charm is lucky is still under investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether it has become important is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And perhaps that&#8217;s the secret.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Lucky Charm doesn&#8217;t need to change your luck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it just needs to remind you that <strong>you are the kind of person who keeps going.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
