What if freedom had two stats?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’ve been playing with a strange thought experiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not a new religion. Not a claim about what elves or demons literally are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A game mechanic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A little piece of mental equipment for thinking about sovereignty<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because I think we often treat freedom as though it were one thing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Free or not free.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But what if there are actually two different kinds of freedom?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Two Stats<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The first is external sovereignty<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How much authority do you have over your circumstances?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your resources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your ability to determine what happens to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second is internal sovereignty<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How much authority do you have over yourself?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can you make a law for yourself and keep it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can you experience an impulse without automatically obeying it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can you decide what kind of person you intend to be and then act accordingly?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These two kinds of sovereignty don’t always travel together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And when we cross them, something interesting happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We get four creatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\ud83e\udddd The Elf<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Externally free.
Internally sovereign.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Elf has both kinds of freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They have meaningful authority over their circumstances, and meaningful authority over themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This isn’t a morality ranking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sovereignty isn’t goodness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Elf can make terrible decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The defining characteristic is simply:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They can govern themselves.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udc79 The Ogre<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Externally enslaved.
Internally sovereign.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something outside the Ogre has claimed authority over their circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their movement may be restricted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their labor may be controlled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their choices may be constrained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But their inner sovereignty remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is where the metaphor needs to become very careful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are people who are literally enslaved in the world today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is not metaphorical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their freedom is being taken from them by other human beings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ogre in this thought experiment is not meant to redefine that reality. It is a separate question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

Can someone lose control of their circumstances without losing complete authority over themselves?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Frederick Douglass is a powerful historical example of why this distinction matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was literally enslaved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His circumstances were controlled by other people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But his intellectual and moral sovereignty were not therefore theirs to possess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ogre reminds us:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

External captivity does not automatically equal internal captivity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\udc7b The Wight<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Externally free.
Internally enslaved.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Wight has the keys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The door is open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody is necessarily holding them there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yet something inside them has become their master.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They recognize laws they cannot obey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They make promises they cannot keep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They know what they want to do, but something else repeatedly takes the throne.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Wight asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

If nothing outside me is stopping me, what inside me keeps winning?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Fear?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Compulsion?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Habit?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Appetite?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The need for approval?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something else?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Wight is where we discover that having choices and being capable of choosing are not necessarily the same thing.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

\ud83d\ude08 The Demon<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Externally enslaved.
Internally enslaved.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Demon has lost sovereignty on both axes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something outside controls them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something inside controls them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And again:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Demon does not mean evil.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This isn’t a morality chart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is a sovereignty chart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Demon can be compassionate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Demon can be intelligent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Demon can desperately want freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The word describes a condition, not a person’s worth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

And Here’s Where It Becomes a Game<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

These aren’t species.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They’re states.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can move between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s the important part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Elf can become an Ogre if external sovereignty is taken away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Elf can become a Wight if internal sovereignty is lost while external freedom remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Ogre can become an Elf if external freedom is restored while internal sovereignty remains intact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Wight can become an Elf if internal sovereignty is recovered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But there’s another movement that matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Wight can become a Demon.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If someone is already internally unsovereign and is then externally enslaved, they move from:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

free + internally enslaved<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

externally enslaved + internally enslaved.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wight \u2192 Demon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Likewise, an Ogre can become a Demon if someone who has already lost external sovereignty subsequently loses internal sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ogre \u2192 Demon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So Demon isn’t simply another creature on the chart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is the convergence point.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both kinds of sovereignty have been lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Wheel<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Now imagine society as a wheel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People move around it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes they move because of choices they make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes because of choices made by other people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes because of circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes because of systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Elf can be forced into an Ogre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Elf can slowly become a Wight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Wight can be captured and become a Demon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Ogre can be psychologically broken and become a Demon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And the reverse movements are possible too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Ogre can regain external freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Wight can recover internal sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Demon can regain one axis and become an Ogre or a Wight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And, eventually, perhaps both.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The states are not identities.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Uncomfortable Word<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

There is an obvious problem with this model.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The word slave<\/strong> already describes a terrible and very real human condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People are enslaved right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So why use the word for an internal condition too?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because I’m trying to point at something very specific:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the relationship between freedom and authority.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Literal slavery is an externally imposed condition in which another person claims authority over you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The internal metaphor describes a condition in which something within you has authority over you that you cannot effectively resist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those things are not equivalent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They should never be treated as equivalent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But they share a structural question:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

Who actually has the reins?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

That question can be useful even when the circumstances are radically different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And perhaps keeping those two meanings carefully separated is more honest than pretending the metaphor doesn’t exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Strange Paradox of Freedom<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Here is where the thought experiment gets interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone can have almost no external power and possess extraordinary internal sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone else can have enormous wealth, authority, comfort, and legal freedom while being unable to govern themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One person may have the door locked from the outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another may have an open door and still be unable to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both are forms of unfreedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are simply different forms of unfreedom.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And that means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Freedom is not one stat.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

What Creature Are You?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Don’t ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

What creature am I?<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

Where am I an Elf?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Where do I possess both external freedom and internal sovereignty?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

Where am I an Ogre?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Where are my circumstances constrained, but my inner authority remains?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

Where am I a Wight?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Where am I technically free, but something inside me consistently governs me?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

Where am I a Demon?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Where have external and internal sovereignty both been compromised?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don’t use the answers to judge yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Use them to see yourself.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s what the map is for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Maybe sovereignty isn’t the absence of rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe sovereignty is the ability to recognize a law, choose it, and govern yourself according to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe freedom isn’t a switch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe it has dimensions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe the most important question isn’t:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAm I free?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe it’s:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cFree from what?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

And then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cFree to do what?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

And finally:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

\u201cWho is actually holding the reins?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Four creatures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two axes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A wheel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No morality ranking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just a map of sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try it on yourself.
Try it on society.
Try it on history.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And see what becomes visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
