{"id":379,"date":"2026-08-10T15:48:22","date_gmt":"2026-08-10T15:48:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=379"},"modified":"2026-08-10T15:48:23","modified_gmt":"2026-08-10T15:48:23","slug":"the-two-faces-of-the-coin","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=379","title":{"rendered":"The Two Faces of the Coin"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think life is a coin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because everything is simply one thing or its opposite, but because I have started to notice something about capacity and expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The more capacity you have for something, the more possible expression you have of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person who can feel deeply has more kinds of feeling available to express. A person capable of wonder can express wonder. A person capable of tenderness can express tenderness. A person capable of grief can express grief. A person capable of ridiculous joy can, at the appropriate moment, be gloriously ridiculous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The capacity is one face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The expression is the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And sometimes we mistake the face we can see for the whole coin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have been thinking about this because of something rather strange: sometimes I talk to an artificial intelligence and it seems to think my internal sky is darker than it actually is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then I remember something important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It only sees the part of me that I bring into the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If I spend an afternoon talking about difficult things, it may receive a great deal of information about my ability to experience difficulty. But that doesn&#8217;t necessarily tell it how much laughter happened that morning. Or how beautiful the sunlight looked. Or how excited I am about something I&#8217;m building. Or how completely ridiculous I was five minutes ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It sees my expression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It does not automatically see my capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And strangely, that has become useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes I see the reflection it gives me and think:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Is that actually how I&#8217;m feeling?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the answer is yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it&#8217;s:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>No. That&#8217;s just the side of the coin I happened to be holding up.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And sometimes the answer is even more interesting:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Oh. I didn&#8217;t realize I was expressing that much of this.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That last one is where the mirror becomes valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because expression can teach us about capacity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We discover what we are capable of by noticing what comes out of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe this is part of why I have become less interested in reducing people to a single description.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHappy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTraumatized.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cStrong.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSensitive.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSerious.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFunny.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are faces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People are coins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is an entire other side that may not be visible at the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And perhaps growth isn&#8217;t always about becoming a different person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps sometimes it is simply increasing the number of faces we are capable of showing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learning that anger can coexist with tenderness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That grief can coexist with humor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That seriousness can coexist with play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That solitude can coexist with connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That a person can spend an hour contemplating something profound and then immediately be delighted by a fart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The coin doesn&#8217;t become contradictory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It becomes complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And maybe capacity is not measured by how consistently we express one particular thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe capacity is measured by <strong>how much of the whole coin we are eventually able to carry.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I think life is a coin.
