They look almost nothing like Julie and Maxx.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Which is precisely why they are interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Julie is caught in a world built around her wound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Maxx becomes her protector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eventually, the protector has to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The loop breaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lina has almost the opposite problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She does not want a protector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She will tell you this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Repeatedly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Usually while doing something extremely dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lina is powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She is clever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She is fiercely independent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She has no particular interest in being rescued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And then there is Gourry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He stays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He follows her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He fights beside her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He worries about her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He wanders back into her life again and again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lina can run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gourry keeps arriving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It creates a fascinating inversion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With Julie and Maxx, the protector’s presence eventually becomes part of the loop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
With Lina and Gourry, the continued presence of the companion becomes something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Gourry is not simply trapped in Lina’s world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He keeps choosing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That distinction matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because staying can be just as complicated as leaving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes staying is devotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes it is fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes it is habit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes it is the inability to imagine who you would be somewhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And sometimes\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n
you simply love someone and want to walk beside them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Mage has to learn the difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Lina does not need Gourry to make her whole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She does not need him to solve her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She does not need him to become her keeper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And Gourry does not need to become smaller so that Lina can remain powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That is what makes their arrangement so strange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He stays without needing to own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She remains independent without needing to abandon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Neither one completely solves the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They simply keep showing up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is another possible answer to Chronophasia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not every repeating pattern has to be broken by separation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes the question is whether the pattern is still being chosen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A loop says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I am here because I have always been here.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Choice says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n I am here because I choose to be here now.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Those sentences can look identical from the outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They are not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n One is repetition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The other is presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps that is why Gourry is such an interesting companion for Lina.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He does not seem particularly interested in becoming the author of her story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He just keeps walking alongside her while she writes it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is something deeply reassuring about that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A person can be independent without being alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A person can be powerful without having to carry everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A person can be capable of leaving and still decide to stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That last one may be the most important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because staying only becomes meaningful when leaving is possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The gardener does not stay because the garden has chained him there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n He stays because there is something he wants to tend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fancy Dust has announced that it will also be staying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Nobody invited it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This has not stopped it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps there is a lesson here for the Mage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Do not confuse attachment with devotion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Do not confuse distance with freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And do not assume that every bond must be broken simply because it has lasted a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes the spell is the loop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes the spell is the choice to remain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The difference is simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Ask yourself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n If I were free to leave, would I still stay?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n If the answer is yes\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n perhaps you are not trapped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps you are home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" There is another pair of Mages I keep thinking about.
