Maxx Breaks the Loop"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a strange old spell hiding inside <em>The Maxx<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It took me a while to recognize it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At first, it looks like a story about a superhero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A purple man with claws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A strange woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A world called the Outback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monsters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Masks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A lot of very strange things happening to very strange people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But underneath all of that is something much quieter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A loop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Julie is hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She retreats into the Outback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Outback becomes a place where she can survive what happened to her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maxx becomes her protector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He belongs to her world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So he protects her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And because he protects her, he remains bound to her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And because he remains bound to her, the relationship continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wound creates the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world creates the protector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The protector maintains the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Round and round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is the kind of loop I mean when I talk about Chronophasia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not simply time repeating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A <strong>pattern repeating itself through time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The past becomes the architecture of the present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The present keeps rebuilding the conditions of the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually nobody remembers where the wall began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They only know that the wall is there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And <em>The Maxx<\/em> does something I find very important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It breaks the loop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not with a bigger spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not with a final battle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not by defeating Julie&#8217;s monsters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Julie has to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And Maxx has to let her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The protector cannot keep protecting her forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because eventually protection itself has become part of the prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the part I love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the mask comes off, there is no greater superhero underneath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is Dave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A gardener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is almost absurdly beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mage has spent all this time looking for the great revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the revelation is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>go tend the garden.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not the Outback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not Julie&#8217;s wounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not the old story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your patch of earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The things that are actually growing now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Chronophasia loop is powerful because it makes the old world feel inevitable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is just how things are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is who I am.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is what always happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But a loop is not the same thing as destiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the spell can be broken by refusing to perform your old role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The protector stops protecting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wounded person stops requiring protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mask comes off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And underneath it is a person who can finally do something ordinary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Plant something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Water it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Watch it grow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is not a small ending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is one of the most profound kinds of magic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because the opposite of a loop is not forgetting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is <strong>continuation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The past remains part of the soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But it does not have to dictate what grows there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fancy Dust has been banned from the garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Apparently it is terrible for the tomatoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are still investigating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps this is what breaking a spell actually looks like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not becoming someone completely new.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not erasing what happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just becoming free enough to stop recreating it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Take off the mask.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Put down the sword.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Find the patch of earth that belongs to you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">plant something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
