There is a dangerous kind of magic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It begins innocently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You learn to read people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You notice the shift in someone’s voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You recognize fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You understand persuasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You learn which words calm a room and which ones can set it on fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You become good at seeing patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is also power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And power has a shadow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Mage who learns to see another person’s weather can begin believing they own the sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They know where you are vulnerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They know what you want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They know what frightens you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They know which spell will make you say yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That knowledge can be used to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It can also be used to control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The difference is not always obvious from the outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A healer and a manipulator may both understand exactly where the wound is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
One asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
How can I help?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The other asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n How can I use this?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n The Mage must be careful here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Understanding someone does not give you ownership of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Knowing why someone behaves a certain way does not make you their master.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Seeing the mechanism does not give you permission to pull every lever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is a particularly seductive spell called:<\/p>\n\n\n\n I know what is best for you.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n It can be cast with very good intentions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Parents use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Teachers use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Lovers use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Leaders use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Mages use it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes they are even correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That is what makes the spell dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Being right does not automatically give you authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Another person remains another person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Their sovereignty survives your insight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps this is one of the great tests of magical knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Can you influence someone?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Of course you can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The harder question is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Can you refrain?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Can you know the weakness and not press it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Can you recognize the fear and not exploit it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Can you persuade without trapping?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Can you teach without making yourself necessary?<\/p>\n\n\n\n Can you hold power without needing to prove that you have it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n The strongest spell may sometimes be the one you choose not to cast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fancy Dust knows nothing about manipulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It simply gets into everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n This is considered a very different kind of problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So the Mage carries the lantern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Learns the spells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Studies the patterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And then learns another lesson:<\/p>\n\n\n\n Other people are not puzzles waiting to be solved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n They are worlds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You may visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You may be welcomed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n You may even be trusted with a key.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But you do not become the owner of the world because someone let you inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That boundary is sacred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And perhaps that is where magic becomes wisdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not when you learn what you can do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n But when you learn what you will not do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" There is a dangerous kind of magic.
