There are questions that do not want answers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not because they are impossible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Because we are not finished asking them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What is consciousness?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Why is there something rather than nothing?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What happens when we die?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Why does beauty move us?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Why does one person become cruel and another become kind?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Why does anything matter?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We are very good at trying to close these questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Give us an empty space and we will put something in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes we put a fact there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes a theory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes a god.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes a story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes Fancy Dust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fancy Dust has never answered a philosophical question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It has, however, appeared inside a sealed container.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We remain concerned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There is something valuable about leaving a little space open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
An unanswered question can become a doorway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You can return to it years later with new eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You can discover that the question was larger than you thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Or stranger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Or perhaps you were asking the wrong question entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Mystery does not always mean ignorance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes it means the thing is larger than the instrument you’re using to examine it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You can understand how a star forms and still stand beneath one in wonder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You can understand the chemistry of a flower and still think it is beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You can understand grief and still not know why losing one particular person hurts the way it does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Knowledge does not always dissolve mystery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes it gives mystery better edges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This matters because certainty can become a cage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you decide too quickly that you know what the universe is doing, you may stop noticing what it is actually doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you decide you know exactly what death means, you may stop listening to the people who are still alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If you decide you know why someone suffered, you may accidentally make their suffering smaller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Some things deserve the dignity of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I don’t know.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n Not forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Just for now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is courage in carrying a question without forcing it to become an answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps the Mage does not need to know everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps the Mage needs to know which questions are worth carrying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Some questions become lanterns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Some become anchors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Some become doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And some\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n we simply set down for a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The universe will still be here when we come back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" There are questions that do not want answers.
