humans to remember.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We like purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We like reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We like knowing what something is for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A hammer is for hitting things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A chair is for sitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A calendar is for telling you that you have somehow reached August again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But then there are things like dancing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody needs to dance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can survive without it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can probably survive without singing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can survive without drawing a dragon on a piece of paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can survive without telling a terrible joke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And yet people keep doing these things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Children are particularly suspicious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Give a child an empty box and they may turn it into a spaceship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Give them a stick and suddenly they have a sword.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Give them a puddle and they have a problem worth jumping into.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They do not appear to require a business case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They play.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Somewhere along the way, many of us forget.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We start asking what things are <em>for<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What is this worth?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What will it accomplish?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What will I get from it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How does this improve me?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes those are good questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They are terrible questions for everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A sunset does not need to improve you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A song does not need to make you productive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A joke does not need to solve a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can eat sparkle chocolate fudge ice cream simply because sparkle chocolate fudge ice cream exists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fancy Dust considers this a foundational principle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody has appointed Fancy Dust to anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This has not stopped it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps play is one of the ways a living thing explores freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You do something without knowing exactly where it will lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You make a sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You move your body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You draw a shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You invent a rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then you break the rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something happens that wasn&#8217;t planned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And suddenly you have discovered something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Play is not necessarily the opposite of seriousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes play is how we learn to take something seriously without being crushed by it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We experiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We fail safely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We discover what fits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We discover what doesn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We find out what happens when we push the button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Occasionally we discover why there shouldn&#8217;t have been a button.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is information too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the universe does not need to have a purpose for us to participate meaningfully in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps existence is allowed to contain things that simply happen because they can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A bird sings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A child laughs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person paints something nobody asked for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stars burn for billions of years without completing a productivity report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And somewhere, inexplicably, there are sparkles in the ice cream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe not everything is an instrument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe some things are simply expressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Life making noise because it is alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So perhaps it is worth keeping a little room in your life for things that accomplish nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walk somewhere for no reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Make something ridiculous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learn an instrument badly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dance when nobody is watching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tell the joke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eat the ice cream.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Put too much sparkle on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There will always be important things waiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Responsibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">People who need you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Problems that need solving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world is not short on seriousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are allowed to be serious about joy, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe that is part of being alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not everything has to become something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some things are allowed to simply happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And sometimes\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">that is more than enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
