We spend a surprising amount of our lives making things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Most of them are small.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A meal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A note.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A joke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A drawing on the corner of a page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A child who knows how to tie their shoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A room that feels safe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We don’t usually call these acts of creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We should.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Creation does not require a mountain or a masterpiece.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes it is simply taking what the world gave you and adding something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A blank page becomes a sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A handful of ingredients becomes dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A quiet room becomes a place where someone can breathe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A thought becomes a question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A question becomes a conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And then something happens that we don’t always expect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
What we make leaves us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The story belongs to the reader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The meal belongs to the person eating it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The lesson belongs to the student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The child becomes their own person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Even a kind word eventually travels somewhere we cannot follow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This can be uncomfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We like to imagine that if we made something, we should get to decide what it becomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But creation is not ownership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You put something into the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The river carries it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Someone downstream may find it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They may keep it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They may throw it away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They may turn it into something else entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That is no longer yours to control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Perhaps this is why creating something can feel strangely vulnerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You are allowing a piece of yourself to exist outside your control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And yet we keep doing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We plant trees we may never sit beneath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We teach things we may never see used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We write words for strangers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We make music for people we will never meet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We leave little marks on the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Not because we expect the world to remember our names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes simply because the world is here, and we were here too.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n There is something beautiful about that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The universe does not appear to require us to produce anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n There is no cosmic productivity chart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n No celestial manager standing over the galaxy asking whether we hit our quarterly goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We make things because making things is one of the ways we participate in being alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A bird makes a nest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A spider makes a web.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A person makes a home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps creation is simply life answering life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n And sometimes the thing we make is not beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes it is a mess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes it fails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sometimes it teaches us what not to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n That’s creation too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Fancy Dust has never successfully made anything useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n It remains committed to glittering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Perhaps that is enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe not everything we leave behind needs to be important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Maybe some things are simply evidence that we were here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A recipe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A ridiculous story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A little gold dust in the carpet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n A lantern left burning for whoever comes next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We do not get to choose how long our creations remain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We only get to choose what we put into the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n So make something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Not because it will last forever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Because it won’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Make it anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" We spend a surprising amount of our lives making things.
