There is always a little distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We tend to think of distance as a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
But perhaps the space between us is also what makes connection possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If there were no distance, there would be no reaching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No invitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No discovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
No choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Love would not be something two people do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It would simply be one thing happening to itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Instead, there are two fires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They can warm each other without becoming one fire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This is why possession is such a strange imitation of love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If I need to own you in order to feel connected to you, I have not actually met you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
I have met something I am trying to control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A sovereign person can leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That is frightening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It is also what makes staying meaningful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A hand held because it must be held is restraint.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A hand held because it is freely offered is something else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The difference can be very small from the outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Inside, it is enormous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Perhaps connection is not the destruction of distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Perhaps it is the decision to build something across it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A friendship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A promise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A joke shared at exactly the right moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes just sitting quietly beside someone while neither of you knows what to say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You do not have to erase the space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You only have to meet across it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And this means every relationship contains a little mystery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You will never know another person completely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They will change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
You will change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There will always be rooms inside them you have never entered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
There should be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
A person is not a house you eventually finish exploring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They are alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
They surprise you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes they disappoint you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes they become more wonderful than you expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes the bridge collapses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Sometimes you build another one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
And sometimes you discover that the space between you was not something to conquer at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
It was simply the place where the meeting happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
