Weight of a Thing"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are some things we treat as though they have weight even when we cannot put them on a scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A promise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A hand held at the right moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A door left open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person who keeps their word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We say these things matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But what does that actually mean?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Matter is easy to understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A stone has mass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A mountain has weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A body takes up space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But meaning has no obvious unit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no little instrument you can place beside a moment and announce:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>This one weighs seven kindnesses.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If there were, someone would immediately try to sell it on television.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And yet we behave as though value is real.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We protect things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We sacrifice for things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We grieve things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We spend years making things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We cross oceans for people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We stay awake beside hospital beds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We keep photographs of people who are no longer here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We save letters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We preserve songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We teach children things we hope they will carry farther than we can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something is happening here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are assigning weight to things that cannot be weighed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps value is one of the ways consciousness touches the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A thing matters because it matters <strong>to someone<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This sounds simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because if value were entirely personal, then anything could be justified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If I value domination, does domination become good?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If I value cruelty, does cruelty become meaningful?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If I value my own happiness above everyone else&#8217;s existence, does that make the suffering of others irrelevant?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clearly something more is happening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We do not merely have values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We negotiate them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We test them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We argue about them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We discover that other beings have values too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And suddenly the world becomes crowded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My freedom meets your freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My hunger meets your hunger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My fear meets your fear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My story meets yours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My needs do not erase yours simply because they are mine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where sovereignty becomes more interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If I am sovereign, then you are not my property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But if you are sovereign too, then neither of us gets to pretend that the other is scenery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have to meet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two fires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two weather systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not identical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not merged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still capable of warming one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This may be why care matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Care is what happens when the existence of something outside yourself becomes relevant to your choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You notice that another being can be hurt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You notice that another being can be helped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then, somehow, their condition enters your decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You could walk past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You choose not to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That choice does not make you less sovereign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is an expression of sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You are choosing what kind of force you want to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is important because morality is sometimes presented as a list of restrictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t do this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t take that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t hurt them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t cross this line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those boundaries matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But perhaps ethics is larger than prohibition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps it is also the art of asking:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What happens because I am here?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I enter a room, what changes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I speak, what happens to the people listening?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I teach, what am I putting into someone else&#8217;s hands?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I become angry, what does my anger do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I have power, what happens to the people who do not?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When I am given trust, what do I do with it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Every action creates a little disturbance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some disturbances fade immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some travel much farther than we will ever know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person says something kind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You carry it for twenty years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You become kinder to someone else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They do the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You may never know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The original person may never know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But something traveled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fancy Dust would probably call this highly suspicious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fancy Dust believes everything travels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nobody has been able to prove Fancy Dust wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is perhaps where stewardship begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not with owning the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With recognizing that you are participating in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You did not make the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can still poison it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You did not invent the child.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can still teach them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You did not create the person standing across from you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can still make their day better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You did not ask the universe to give you a body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You still have some responsibility for what you do with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We inherit things we did not create.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then we alter them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then we hand them forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This happens constantly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Language.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trauma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recipes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Promises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are all carrying things someone else placed into the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some things we should put down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some things we should repair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some things we should protect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some things we should pass along.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And perhaps some things we should create that did not exist before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A little more kindness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A better question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A safer room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A beautiful object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A ridiculous joke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A useful map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A lantern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The universe does not appear to come with labels explaining which things are worth caring about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We have to participate in that work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Which means we can get it wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is part of the responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can care about something that harms another thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can mistake possession for love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can mistake obedience for goodness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can mistake your fear for wisdom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can mistake certainty for truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So value needs companionship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Discernment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And perhaps mercy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because we are going to get things wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is not whether you will ever choose badly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is what you do when you discover that you did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you defend the choice because admitting the mistake would hurt your identity?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or can you change?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Can you say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I was wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I hurt someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I didn&#8217;t understand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I know more now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let me try again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That, too, is a kind of value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The willingness to treat truth as more important than being right.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe that is what gives a thing its weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not how loudly we declare that it matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But what we are willing to do because it does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A promise has weight when you keep it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love has weight when it changes your behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mercy has weight when you had the power to punish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Freedom has weight when you protect someone else&#8217;s freedom too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A lantern has weight when you carry it into the dark.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And a life\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">perhaps a life has weight simply because there is no one else who can live it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We do not need the universe to hand us a certificate of importance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We are already here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We already affect one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We already leave things behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps value is not something we discover hidden beneath the stars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps it is something we create between one another\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">and then become responsible for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That seems like a fairly serious responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fortunately, Fancy Dust has agreed to help.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has not explained how.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has mostly been glittering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
