{"id":323,"date":"2026-08-10T00:34:50","date_gmt":"2026-08-10T00:34:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=323"},"modified":"2026-08-10T00:34:51","modified_gmt":"2026-08-10T00:34:51","slug":"the-universe-gets-a-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/depthguide.com\/?p=323","title":{"rendered":"The Universe Gets a Vote"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a particular freedom that comes from realizing you are allowed to choose your own frame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can decide what something means.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can change the story you tell yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can notice the spell you have been living inside and decide whether you still want it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can pick up the lantern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can put down the sword.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can choose mercy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can choose to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can choose to stay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is, in fact, extremely useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is only one small complication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The universe gets a vote.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can believe you are going to walk ten miles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your feet may have other opinions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can decide that the weather looks perfectly reasonable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sky may produce an argument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can make a map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The mountain remains where it was before you drew it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can tell yourself that someone loves you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can tell yourself they hate you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other people are not characters in your story. They are sovereign beings carrying their own weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reality has an annoying habit of continuing to exist outside our interpretations of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not an insult to interpretation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is what makes interpretation interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the world simply became whatever we believed it to be, there would be no discovery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There would be no surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There would be no reason to learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There would be no need for discernment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There would be no reason to ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What do I know?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A map is useful precisely because the territory does not need the map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A spell is useful precisely because the world is not required to obey it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A frame can help you see something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It can also hide something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And sometimes the most important thing you can discover is the thing that doesn&#8217;t fit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The arrow misses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The plan fails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The body gets tired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The person says no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The door isn&#8217;t there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The river is higher than you expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The world does not rearrange itself to protect the story you were telling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And this is where sovereignty becomes a little stranger than it first appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sovereignty is not the ability to make reality obey you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That would be domination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sovereignty is the ability to remain capable of choosing when reality does not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mage throws the arrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mage watches where it lands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then the Mage adjusts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because the Mage was weak for missing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because the universe was cruel for refusing to cooperate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because <strong>information arrived.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reality spoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the deepest form of discernment is simply becoming quiet enough to hear it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And sometimes reality says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes it says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Try again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You were wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You were right, but not for the reason you thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And occasionally, wonderfully:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You had no idea this was possible.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That last one is worth protecting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because if we become too attached to our maps, we eventually stop exploring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We start defending the map instead of looking at the mountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depth Guide is a map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The metaphors are maps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spells are maps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This writing is a map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even this sentence is a map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fancy Dust would probably object to being called a map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fancy Dust has never demonstrated much respect for cartography.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is apparently a conspiracy that sparkles are already in everything, and nobody has successfully explained where they come from.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is suspicious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But even Fancy Dust has to obey certain rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Drop it, and it falls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blow on it, and it moves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Put it in chocolate fudge ice cream, and someone eventually eats it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The universe gets a vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That doesn&#8217;t make the world less magical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I think it makes it more so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because if reality cannot simply be commanded into becoming whatever we want, then every genuine encounter with it contains the possibility of surprise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is something outside the spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something that can resist the frame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something that can answer back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Something that can teach us something we did not already know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The arrow can miss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The map can be wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spell can fail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And the world remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is still something here to
