\u2014 Tales from the Universe<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have a theory that the universe has a sense of humor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not a sophisticated sense of humor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not the kind that appreciates carefully constructed satire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I’m talking about the kind of humor that makes you stare at the ceiling and say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Really?”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because sometimes life is just a little too perfectly ridiculous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You make a careful plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something goes wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The thing that went wrong turns out to be exactly what needed to happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You spend three hours looking for something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is in your hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You spend years trying to understand yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then one day a six-year-old says something completely obvious and suddenly everything makes sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You ask the universe for a sign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A bird poops on your car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You ask for a better<\/strong> sign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It sends another bird.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

I don’t think the universe is necessarily trying to communicate with us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That would be presumptuous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe it just finds us amusing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are billions of us down here, marching around with our little plans and calendars and five-year strategies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We schedule appointments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We organize our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We say things like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“This is exactly how it’s going to go.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The universe hears this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And somewhere, I imagine, it smiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

There is a particular kind of cosmic joke I suspect the universe enjoys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You spend your entire life trying to become something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Successful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Impressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then eventually you discover that the people who love you mostly just want you to sit down and eat something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You spend years worrying about how other people see you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then you realize they were mostly worrying about themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You spend an enormous amount of energy trying to control what happens next.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then life reminds you that you cannot even reliably predict what you will have for lunch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The universe has a strange way of reducing enormous existential problems to very ordinary ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Have you eaten?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did you sleep?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where are your keys?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why is there a sock in the refrigerator?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are the great philosophical questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

And perhaps the universe’s favorite joke is that we keep looking for meaning in the enormous things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The thunderstorm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The eclipse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The stars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The great turning points.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But meaning often sneaks in through the smallest doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone makes you laugh when you needed it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone remembers your name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You see sunlight on a kitchen floor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A dog is extremely happy to see you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You taste something delicious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You hear a song you haven’t heard in twenty years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A stranger holds the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And somehow everything feels a little better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Maybe that’s the joke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We keep expecting the universe to shout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it keeps whispering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We expect a burning bush.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It gives us a warm cup of coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We expect a prophecy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It gives us a conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We expect a revelation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It gives us a stupid joke at exactly the right moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We expect a map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It gives us a flashlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then we complain that the flashlight isn’t a map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The universe probably finds this hilarious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

I also suspect it enjoys irony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You spend your whole life trying to become independent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then you discover that being human means needing other people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You spend years trying to be taken seriously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the person who loves you most makes you laugh until you can’t breathe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You try desperately to avoid embarrassment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And ten years later, the embarrassing thing is one of your favorite stories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You try to make yourself unforgettable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then discover that the most meaningful things you did were things nobody applauded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You try to leave a legacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And someone remembers you because you always made the best pancakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The universe doesn’t seem particularly impressed by our definitions of importance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

There are probably rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cosmic rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I imagine one of them says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If a human being becomes completely certain about what happens next, introduce a goose.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nobody knows why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It just works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another probably says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If someone desperately needs to learn humility, give them a printer.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If someone says, “What else could possibly go wrong?” something else must immediately go wrong.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

These are ancient laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Scientists have been trying to formalize them for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are getting nowhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mostly because the universe keeps adding exceptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

But perhaps there is something more beautiful underneath the joke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Humor creates distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It lets us step outside ourselves for a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can be terrified of something and still laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can be grieving and still find something funny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can be confused and still enjoy the absurdity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can look at the enormous, incomprehensible machinery of existence and say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Well, that’s certainly a thing.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And somehow, you’re still here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Breathing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wondering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laughing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Maybe the universe doesn’t laugh at<\/em> us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe it laughs with<\/strong> us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe every time we find something funny in the middle of something difficult, we’re participating in something much older than we realize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The stars burn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Galaxies collide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Planets spin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Life appears.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Creatures become conscious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And eventually one of those creatures looks at another creature and says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Did you seriously just do that?”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And both of them laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps that’s one of the universe’s favorite sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

So I don’t think we should be afraid of absurdity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think we should make room for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let the plan fail occasionally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Laugh when something ridiculous happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Enjoy the coincidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notice the beautiful little things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let yourself be surprised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And when life hands you something completely unreasonable, don’t immediately assume you’ve failed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the universe is simply being funny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the wrong turn is the interesting road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the disaster becomes the story you tell for the rest of your life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the thing you were desperately trying to avoid becomes the thing that introduces you to yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And sometimes\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

very occasionally\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the universe puts a banana peel directly in the path of your carefully constructed dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is nothing to do but laugh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pick yourself up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Brush yourself off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look around.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Okay. I see what we’re doing.”<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The universe won’t answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It will probably just smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And somewhere, very far away, another cosmic clerk will quietly write:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human noticed the joke.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Proceed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
