Gabriev: The Strength of Simply Being There"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is a kind of person who is very easy to underestimate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They don&#8217;t talk about how capable they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They don&#8217;t explain their philosophy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They don&#8217;t seem particularly interested in proving themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They may even appear somewhat ridiculous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then something happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone is in danger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sword comes out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And suddenly everyone remembers who they are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is Gourry Gabriev.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The blond swordsman of <em>Slayers<\/em> is one of my favorite examples of a quality that is surprisingly difficult to describe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>presence without performance.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Our Boy Is Kind of an Idiot<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let&#8217;s get this out of the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gourry is not exactly the intellectual center of the party.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lina Inverse is thinking about magic, strategy, treasure, revenge, food, and probably three different schemes at any given moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gourry is sometimes thinking about swords.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes absolutely nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He can be spectacularly dense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that is part of what makes him interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because his lack of sophistication doesn&#8217;t mean he lacks depth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He simply doesn&#8217;t spend much time narrating himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He doesn&#8217;t need to construct a grand identity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He doesn&#8217;t need everyone to understand how complicated he is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He just shows up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Sword Tells the Truth<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gourry&#8217;s relationship with the sword is one of the clearest expressions of his character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He doesn&#8217;t need to constantly announce that he is a swordsman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He doesn&#8217;t need to threaten people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He doesn&#8217;t walk around looking for opportunities to demonstrate superiority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He carries the sword.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the moment arrives, he knows what to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is something profoundly reassuring about competence that doesn&#8217;t need an audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sword doesn&#8217;t care about Gourry&#8217;s reputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It doesn&#8217;t care whether he sounds intelligent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It doesn&#8217;t care whether he has explained himself correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the moment comes, either he can do the thing or he can&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And Gourry can.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Absence of Performance<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where Gourry becomes more interesting than a simple comic-relief character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He doesn&#8217;t seem particularly interested in being impressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person who is constantly trying to appear powerful is spending some of their power on appearing powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gourry generally doesn&#8217;t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is not cultivating an aura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He simply possesses capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is a different kind of presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He can be silly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He can be distracted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He can say something profoundly stupid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And none of that seems to threaten his sense of who he is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His competence doesn&#8217;t require him to be intellectually impressive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His masculinity doesn&#8217;t require him to dominate everyone around him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His courage doesn&#8217;t require him to stop being gentle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is very little performance between Gourry and the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And that gives him weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Guardian<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Perhaps the most important thing about Gourry is that he stays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lina is chaos with legs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She is brilliant, dangerous, ambitious, impulsive, greedy, and extraordinarily capable of getting herself into situations that would make a normal person&#8217;s obituary considerably longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gourry follows her anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because he has some elaborate theory about destiny.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because he needs to control her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because he is trying to become her master.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He simply decides:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>I&#8217;m going with you.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then he goes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is a surprisingly powerful form of commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No grand declaration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Strength That Doesn&#8217;t Need Control<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the things I like most about him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gourry is powerful without needing to make everyone else smaller.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He doesn&#8217;t need Lina to be weak so that he can be strong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He doesn&#8217;t need to win every conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He doesn&#8217;t need to be the smartest person in the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He can let Lina be terrifyingly intelligent while he handles the sword.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He can allow someone else to possess a strength he doesn&#8217;t have without experiencing that as a threat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A fragile ego needs hierarchy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A secure person can simply notice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You are good at that.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And be happy about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reiatsu<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This brings us back to reiatsu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If presence is the amount of <em>you<\/em> that actually arrives when you enter a room, Gourry has an enormous amount of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because he is loud.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because he is mysterious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not because he cultivates an intimidating persona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because he is remarkably <strong>unfragmented<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gourry is usually just Gourry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He isn&#8217;t simultaneously trying to calculate how everyone perceives him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He isn&#8217;t constructing a social strategy every second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He isn&#8217;t constantly negotiating his status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He doesn&#8217;t seem particularly interested in proving that he belongs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He is there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when something matters, nearly all of him is available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Fool and the Warrior<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is an old archetype hiding inside Gourry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fool is not necessarily stupid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fool is the person who doesn&#8217;t need to look sophisticated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They can ask the obvious question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They can misunderstand something spectacularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They can laugh at themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They can walk into situations that a more self-conscious person would spend three hours analyzing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And yet, when the moment requires courage, the fool can become extraordinarily direct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gourry&#8217;s simplicity is therefore not merely a weakness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is also a freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He has fewer layers between himself and action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When someone needs help, he helps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When someone needs protecting, he protects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the sword needs to come out, the sword comes out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There isn&#8217;t a committee meeting in his head first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Makes Him Strong<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gourry&#8217;s strength isn&#8217;t just his swordsmanship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is the combination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Competence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Loyalty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Courage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simplicity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And perhaps most importantly:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>lack of pretense.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He doesn&#8217;t have to become impressive before he can be useful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He doesn&#8217;t have to understand everything before he can act.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He doesn&#8217;t have to be profound before he can be good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He just needs to be there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when he is needed, he is there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Lesson of Our Boy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is something worth stealing from Gourry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not his sword.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though, admittedly, the sword is pretty excellent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The thing worth stealing is his relationship with himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t have to constantly explain your worth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t have to perform competence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t have to become intimidating to become powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t have to be the smartest person in the room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t have to make your presence enormous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can simply become <strong>solid.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Know what you know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Practice what you care about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Keep your promises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stand beside the people you choose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learn your craft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Laugh when you&#8217;re being an idiot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And when the moment comes that actually matters\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">be there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Measure of the Man<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe that&#8217;s the real reason Gourry has such enduring charm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He&#8217;s not aspirational in the usual way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He isn&#8217;t saying:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;Become like me because I am extraordinary.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He&#8217;s showing something quieter:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You can be ordinary in a hundred ways and still be extraordinary when it matters.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can be silly and courageous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Simple and powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gentle and dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Loyal without being possessive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Strong without being domineering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t need to perform depth to possess it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t need to look like a warrior to have the heart of one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the person everyone underestimates is simply the person who isn&#8217;t interested in impressing them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And then the sword comes out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And everyone remembers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Oh.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
