You see someone making choices you wouldn’t make and immediately know what they should have done instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You see someone living differently from you and your mind begins constructing a little courtroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Evidence is presented.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arguments are made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A verdict is reached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And then you go home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nothing changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Except you spent part of your life somewhere you weren’t even standing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Strange Waste of Judgment<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There is a difference between judgment<\/strong> and discernment<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Judgment asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is wrong with them?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Discernment asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do I want to be here?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s a radically different question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t have to determine whether someone is a good person before deciding you don’t want them in your life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t have to diagnose their character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t have to prove they’re toxic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t have to construct a philosophical argument explaining why their behavior is unacceptable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can simply know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I don’t want to be here.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

You Are Allowed to Choose Your Coordinates<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Where you are matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who you’re with matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What you’re doing matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What you spend your time around matters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The environments you inhabit slowly become part of you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So perhaps the more useful question isn’t:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What kind of person is that?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do I want to spend another hour here?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do I want to wake up here?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do I want these people around me?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do I want this relationship?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do I want this job?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do I want this conversation?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do I want this community?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do I want to become more like the people around me?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do I want this to be my normal?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those questions put the steering wheel back in your hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Sovereignty Is Not Control<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

This is where sovereignty gets misunderstood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sovereignty does not mean controlling everyone around you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It means recognizing what is actually yours to choose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t control another person’s personality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t control their choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t control whether they understand you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t control whether they become kinder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t control whether they agree with you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t control whether they change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But you can decide:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where you stand.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who you stand beside.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What you participate in.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What you tolerate.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

What you leave.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is an enormous amount of power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And unlike controlling other people, it is power you can actually use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Question Changes<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Imagine someone does something you dislike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The habitual response is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is wrong with this person?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is this something I want around me?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notice what just happened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first question points outward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second points home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first requires an investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The second requires a decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t need a complete theory of someone else’s soul to decide whether you want to share your afternoon with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You just need to know where you want to spend your afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Great Escape From the Courtroom<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

There is a particular kind of exhaustion that comes from constantly judging everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You become the judge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The jury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The prosecutor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The defense attorney.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The historian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The psychologist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The moral philosopher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And every stranger becomes another case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What an extraordinary amount of unpaid labor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, your own life is waiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your garden needs tending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your body needs rest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your relationships need attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your work needs doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your dreams are sitting patiently in the corner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And you’re over there conducting a trial about someone you haven’t spoken to in six months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can resign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Discernment Is Cleaner<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Discernment doesn’t require hatred.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can decide someone isn’t good for you without deciding they’re evil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can leave a relationship without making the other person a monster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can change jobs without declaring your former workplace morally bankrupt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can disagree with someone without needing to destroy their dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can recognize danger without becoming consumed by the person who carries it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not for me.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And mean it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That sentence is extraordinarily powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sovereign No<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

A sovereign no<\/strong> doesn’t need a courtroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It doesn’t require a twelve-page explanation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It doesn’t require everyone to agree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

is enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No, I don’t want to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No, I don’t want to participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No, I don’t want to be treated that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No, I don’t want this relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No, I don’t want this environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No, I don’t want to become this person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And perhaps the most important:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No, I don’t need to make you wrong in order to choose something different.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Your Attention Is a Currency<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Judgment spends attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every minute spent obsessing over someone else’s behavior is a minute that cannot be spent living your own life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That doesn’t mean never notice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notice everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Discernment requires observation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

See the behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Understand the pattern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gather the information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then make the decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The trick is to stop spending your attention after the decision has already been made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If someone has demonstrated that you don’t want them in your life, you don’t need to keep studying them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where Do You Want to Be?<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

This is the question I keep coming back to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who deserves what?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who is right?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who is the villain?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Where do I want to be?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Where do I want to wake up?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who do I want beside me?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What kind of conversations do I want to have?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What kind of work do I want to do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What kind of person do I want to become?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What environments make that person easier to become?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What environments make that person harder to become?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those questions are about your actual life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They produce movement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

You Don’t Need Permission to Move<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes we wait for a sufficiently good reason to leave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We think we need a verdict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We need proof.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We need everyone to agree that the situation is bad enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We need permission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But your life isn’t a prison sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t have to demonstrate beyond reasonable doubt that somewhere is terrible before deciding you’d rather be somewhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Preference is enough.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are allowed to choose the life you want.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because everything else is evil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because this is the direction you want to walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Depth Guide Spell of Sovereignty<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Here is the spell:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you catch yourself judging someone, pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What am I actually learning from this observation?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the answer is nothing, let it go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do I want to be here?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If yes, participate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If no, move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re unsure, observe longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If someone is hurting you, establish a boundary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If someone is dangerous, protect yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If someone is simply different, let them be different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t have to turn every difference into a moral emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You have somewhere to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ultimate Judgment<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the only judgment that deserves your deepest attention is this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do I want to be here?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, in this relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, in this room.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, in this community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, in this job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, in this habit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, in this conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here, inside this version of myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And if the answer is no?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t need to hate the place you are leaving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t need to hate the people you are leaving behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t even need to fully understand why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can simply stand up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take your things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And walk toward somewhere you would rather be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is not judgment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is choice<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And choice is one of the quietest forms of sovereignty we possess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The world will always provide people to judge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There will always be someone behaving badly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone being foolish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone being cruel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone being strange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone making decisions you wouldn’t make.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your life is happening somewhere else.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Go decide where you want to be.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
