The Ten Commandments, Ma\u2019at, and the Craft of Becoming Trustworthy<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

There are old words that become strange when they travel too far from home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commandment.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sin.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

God.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Goddess.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Purity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Truth.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Order.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We inherit these words after thousands of years of cultural weather.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes the original shape is still visible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes it isn’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So let’s do something a little dangerous and a little useful:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s translate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because the ancient traditions were secretly saying exactly what we want them to say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They weren’t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ten Commandments belong to a particular Hebrew religious tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The principles of Ma’at belong to ancient Egyptian religion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are not interchangeable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But they can be placed beside one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And when we do, something interesting happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One begins to look like a Boundary Spell<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other begins to look like a Balance Spell<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And together they describe something remarkably close to a fundamental problem of being human:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you become someone who can be trusted with power?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Every Spell Needs a Grammar<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

A spell is not merely a collection of magical words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A spell establishes a relationship between intention and reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I do this, something follows.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ten Commandments have this quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They establish boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not murder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not steal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not bear false witness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not commit adultery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not worship idols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honor your parents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep sacred time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not covet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The language is categorical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is inside the boundary.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is outside it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That makes the commandments a useful model for what I will call the Boundary Spell<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Boundary Spell teaches:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

Not everything you can do is yours to do.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

That sentence alone is worth carrying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Boundary Spell<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Imagine a circle drawn around a human being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside the circle is agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Outside the circle is everything that is not yours to control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your neighbor’s property is outside your authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their body is outside your authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their relationships are outside your authority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their testimony belongs to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their life belongs to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their worship belongs to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even their inner world is not yours to possess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The commandment becomes a magical instruction:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Know where your power ends.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is one of the first lessons of spellcraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Power without boundaries becomes chaos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A spellcaster who cannot distinguish mine<\/em> from not mine<\/em> is not powerful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They are dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The First Spellcraft Check<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Before acting, ask:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is this mine to do?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can I?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Will I get away with it?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do I want to?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can I make them?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is this mine to do?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That question is a boundary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And boundaries are magical because they change behavior before behavior becomes consequence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Spell of False Witness<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Consider lying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ordinary interpretation is simple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don’t lie.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But watch what happens when we treat truth as infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

People navigate reality using information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If I deliberately corrupt the information available to you, I have altered the world you are navigating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A false testimony can send an innocent person to prison.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A lie can destroy a relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A fabricated story can turn a crowd against someone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A false accusation can change the trajectory of a life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lie is therefore not merely a sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is an intervention in reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Boundary Spell says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not use your capacity to communicate as a weapon against reality.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is spellcraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Then Comes Ma’at<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

And now we cross the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ancient Egyptian concept of Ma’at<\/strong> brings another dimension into the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ma’at is associated with truth, justice, order, balance, rightness, and the proper functioning of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The famous declarations associated with the judgment of the dead take a different form from the Ten Commandments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You shall not.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

We hear:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have not.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have not stolen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have not murdered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have not lied.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have not cheated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have not exploited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have not acted unjustly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The grammatical shift is enormous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Boundary Spell says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are the lines.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Balance Spell says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Show me how you lived.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Balance Spell<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

A balance doesn’t tell you what you are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It measures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is what makes Ma’at such a powerful metaphor for moral development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question isn’t merely whether you knew the rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question is whether your life produced balance or disorder.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did your presence make the world more trustworthy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or less?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did people become safer around you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or less safe?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did your knowledge help?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or did you use knowledge to manipulate?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did your strength protect?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or dominate?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did your wealth sustain?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or consume?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did your words clarify reality?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or obscure it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is the Balance Spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Heart Goes on the Scale<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The ancient Egyptian image of the heart being weighed against the feather of Ma’at is one of the great pieces of spiritual technology humans have ever imagined.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The heart is placed on the scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not your r\u00e9sum\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not your social media profile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not your excuses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not your reputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And suddenly the metaphor becomes almost painfully contemporary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because every human being leaves a weight behind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every interaction changes something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every lie changes something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every kindness changes something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every betrayal changes something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every boundary respected changes something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every boundary violated changes something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You are constantly casting spells through your behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most of them don’t look magical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s the trick.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Your Nervous System Is Part of the Spell<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

This is where I want to make the concept practical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person who cannot regulate themselves has a difficult relationship with power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anger becomes a spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fear becomes a spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Desperation becomes a spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jealousy becomes a spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Impulse becomes a spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t need supernatural powers to alter the environment around you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You only need a nervous system capable of broadcasting consequences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A regulated person can pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A dysregulated person may act before they understand what they’re doing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So when I say God or Goddess<\/strong> in this interpretive framework, I am not asking you to imagine an omnipotent supernatural being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am asking you to imagine:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A healthy, well-regulated, educated, capable person who can steward reality responsibly.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

A steward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A stewardess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone capable of carrying something precious without crushing it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone capable of possessing power without becoming possessed by it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The God\/Goddess Translation<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

This is deliberately a translation rather than a historical claim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ancient Egyptian religion had its own meanings for its gods and goddesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those meanings should not be rewritten as though they secretly meant modern psychological concepts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But when we encounter divine imagery, we can ask what human capacity the image might help us contemplate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Godhood becomes an image of mature capability<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not perfection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not omniscience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not invulnerability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Education.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stewardship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question becomes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you were entrusted with more power, would you become safer or more dangerous?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is a much more interesting question than:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How powerful are you?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Spell of Idols<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The Ten Commandments warn against idols.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spellcraft gives us a useful translation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An idol is something you mistake for the ultimate thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Money becomes the ultimate thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Status becomes the ultimate thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beauty becomes the ultimate thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sex becomes the ultimate thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Political identity becomes the ultimate thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being right becomes the ultimate thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even your own self-image can become an idol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You start protecting the image instead of protecting reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is dangerous magic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because now every piece of evidence that contradicts the idol must be destroyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Boundary Spell says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not give a finite object infinite authority.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Spell of Coveting<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Coveting is another remarkable commandment because it reaches beyond behavior.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can obey the law while still poisoning yourself internally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t steal the house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t take the spouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t take the possessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But you sit there imagining that your life would become meaningful if only you possessed what someone else has.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The spell has already begun.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Comparison has entered the nervous system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Desire has become measurement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another person’s existence has become an accusation against your own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Balance Spell asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Can you receive your own life without requiring someone else’s life to be smaller?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That’s a spell worth learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Steward’s Question<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Here is the question I would put on the Depth Guide card:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n

What has been entrusted to you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Your body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your knowledge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your relationships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your reputation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your abilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You don’t own all of these in the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But you are responsible for what you do with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is stewardship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Boundary Spell Without the Balance Spell<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

There is a danger here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boundaries alone can become rigidity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person can become obsessed with rules while losing the reason the rules exist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They can say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I followed the commandment.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And still leave destruction behind them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A person can obey every external rule while becoming cruel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Boundary Spell tells you where not to step.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It does not automatically teach you how to walk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For that, we need the Balance Spell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Balance Spell Without the Boundary Spell<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

But balance alone has a danger too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If everything becomes subjective, the scales become meaningless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Someone can say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It felt right to me.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And use that feeling to justify almost anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is why boundaries matter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Boundary Spell establishes minimum conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Balance Spell asks what kind of life grows when those conditions are respected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One restrains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other evaluates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Do not cross this line.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The other says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Look at what your life is producing.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

Together, They Become a Discipline<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Boundary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Boundary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is how a person learns stewardship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is mine to do?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What happened because I did it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What can I learn?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What boundary needs strengthening?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What relationship needs repair?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What capability needs developing?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Try again.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is not moral perfection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is moral feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Spellcraft Check<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

So here’s a little Depth Guide spellcraft check for real life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When you are about to act, pause.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Boundary<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Is this mine to do?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Intention<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

What am I actually trying to accomplish?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Capacity<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Am I regulated enough to make this decision well?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Consequence<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

What happens to other people if I am wrong?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Stewardship<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Am I using my power to protect, create, clarify, or care\u2014or to control, consume, punish, or possess?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Balance<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

After I act, is reality likely to be more orderly or less orderly?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Accountability<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If this action were placed on the scale, would I still defend it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is spellcraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because the universe necessarily shoots lightning when you break a rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because your actions change the world<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is magic enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Real Spell<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

The deepest spell isn’t:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Become a God.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It isn’t:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Become a Goddess.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It isn’t even:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Become perfect.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Become someone who can be trusted with what they have been given.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regulate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Observe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Repair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tell the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Respect boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Protect what is vulnerable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Use strength carefully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rest when necessary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Admit when you don’t know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Change when evidence requires it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And when you finally acquire more power\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n

become more responsible, not less.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is the difference between possessing power and stewarding it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\n

The Mage and the Scale<\/h1>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps that’s why these ancient texts still feel alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ten Commandments stand at the threshold with a lantern.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are the boundaries.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ma’at stands beside the scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now show me what you did with them.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And you stand between them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not as a sinner waiting to be punished.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not as a god pretending to be perfect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But as a human being learning the oldest form of magic:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

how to carry power without letting it corrupt the person carrying it.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The spell begins with a boundary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The spell matures through balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And eventually, if you practice long enough,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

the spell becomes you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
