think of speech as the thing that influences us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But silence can shape a room just as powerfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone asks you a question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They don&#8217;t respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The silence grows.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And suddenly you are talking again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Explaining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clarifying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Offering information nobody asked for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe even negotiating against yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The silence didn&#8217;t tell you to do any of this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>You filled it in.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s the strange power of Silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Perception Check: What happened when nobody spoke?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Notice your own impulse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you become uncomfortable?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you rush to repair the atmosphere?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you start explaining?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do you offer a concession just to make the tension disappear?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The spell may not be coming from the other person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It may be coming from your own desire to resolve uncertainty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is important to know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Empty Space<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silence creates an empty space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Humans are remarkably good at filling empty spaces with meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If someone doesn&#8217;t answer your message, your mind may produce ten explanations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If someone looks at you silently, you may begin searching their face for a verdict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If a room goes quiet after you speak, you may assume you said something wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But silence is not automatically information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes silence means:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Nothing.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s harder to remember than it sounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 wait.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe they expect you to become uncomfortable enough to agree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t have to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can let the silence remain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is one of the simplest pieces of spellcraft:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Don&#8217;t automatically rescue someone from the silence they created.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If they have something to say, they can say it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Counterspell: Let the Silence Exist<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is deceptively difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone asks:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;So what do you think?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t know.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of inventing an answer:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;I don&#8217;t know yet.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let it breathe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone says something unfair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of immediately defending yourself:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Pause.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Someone makes class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The silence gives your nervous system time to catch up with the conversation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advanced Counterspell: Ask Once<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes someone is withholding information and waiting for you to guess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Don&#8217;t guess.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If they are upset, they can tell you why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You don&#8217;t have to perform psychic archaeology on another person&#8217;s feelings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Other Side of the Spell<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Silence can also be a gift.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A good teacher sometimes stops talking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A good friend sometimes sits beside you without trying to fix anything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A parent can hold silence long enough for a child to find their own words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A person who is comfortable with silence gives another person room to emerge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is the difference between <strong>silence as pressure<\/strong> and <strong>silence as space.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes everyone is simply thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes the other person is waiting for you to finish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sometimes you are waiting for yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let the silence exist long enough to discover which one it is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because when you stop being afraid of silence, something interesting happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You become much harder to hurry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You become much harder to make speak before you&#8217;re ready.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And you begin to hear things that were hidden underneath all the noise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The counterspell is wonderfully simple:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Wait.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Let the room be quiet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">See what comes back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
